4. Crimean War

• Frist Enfield Rifles were being issued early 1955
5. The Second Boer War
1886 French invent smokeless powder, gunpowder which
produced smoke obscured the target, gave away positions and
was limited to close range.

• Smokeless
• Magazine rifle
• Quick loading (bolt action)
• Upgraded after Boer War for WW1
• Introduced 1895
• Nicknamed the SMELLY
6. Naval Gun ‘Old Joey’
• Battle of Magersfontein
• British used the ‘Old Joey’ to bombard the Boer’s
• Poor intelligence meant they targeted wrong part of the hill
Mauser Rifle
• Used by Boer infantry
• Small calibre
• High velocity
• Smokeless Cartridge
• Magazine rifle
• Highly effective against British at long ranges.
• Boers also used Enfield's
During Battle of Colenso the Boer’s smokeless fire made them difficult
to locate.

Creeping Barrage
Used by British during the relief of Ladysmith
Skirmish Line
This irregular warfare tactic was used extensively by Boer troops
which caused British defeat during the first stage of war.
