Optimization involves shrinking file sizes, prioritizing relevant content, and creating efficient layouts to encourage faster loading times and keep users engaged on websites. Key techniques include using stylesheets instead of embedded CSS, positioning non-essential code lower on pages, splitting large tables and content across multiple pages, and loading media separately rather than embedding it. The goal is for users to access important information quickly while other content loads in the background.
The document describes an automatic recommendation scheme for personalized IPTV services. It presents a scheme that uses collaborative filtering to recommend TV program contents to users based on their viewing histories, without requiring explicit ratings from users. The scheme clusters users into groups based on their genre preferences inferred from viewing histories. It then obtains candidate programs for an active user via collaborative filtering within their user group. The candidates are ranked using a novel ranking model to produce the top recommendations. Experimental results showed the approach achieved average precision of about 77% for top-5 recommendations.
Presentation at the " European Science is dead: long live European Science!" Francesco Sylos Labini
This document summarizes information about the website Roars in Numbers, which was founded in 2011 by 8 scientists. It has grown to include 14 editors and over 120 contributors. The site publishes 1-2 articles per day and receives an average of 10,000 visits per day. Roars provides information on topics related to higher education, research evaluation, and innovation in Italy. It takes a fact-based approach to feed public discussion with evidence from academics. The reformation of higher education and introduction of a controversial research evaluation agency in Italy prompted the creation of Roars. The document argues that building a common cultural ground among scientists and academics in Europe should guide European policy, rather than bureaucracy.

The document summarizes a map scanning pilot project underway at the UCLA Library. The project aims to digitize maps from the historical California and Los Angeles collections over six months. The goals are to scan as many maps as possible, work out workflow issues, and assess the process to plan for future expansion. Examples of scanned maps are shown and feedback is solicited on the quality and usability of the digital images for research and student needs.

It discusses that government information is produced by federal, state, local, international and non-governmental organizations. It also outlines some key characteristics of government information, such as it being authoritative and produced as a result of legal requirements or grant-funded research. Additionally, the document discusses tools that can be used to find government information, such as reference interviews, agency websites, catalogs and the Freedom of Information Act.
As the chair of the State and Local Documents Task Force, I decided to try a different approach to our meeting format at the 2009 Annual Meeting. Part was information sharing but the majority was spent discussing and working on exercises related to state and local data.

The document discusses the benefits of exercise for mental health. Regular physical activity can help reduce anxiety and depression and improve mood and cognitive function. Exercise causes chemical changes in the brain that may help protect against mental illness and improve symptoms for those who already suffer from conditions like anxiety and depression.

The document outlines the issues facing science in Europe according to Francesco Sylos Labini. It discusses the European crisis, marked by decreasing investment in research and development, unemployment, and a lagging behind of Southern European countries. It also examines the "Harvard here" model pursued by some governments to create elite universities, but argues this does not work and diversity of research is more important. The document advocates for increased public investment in basic research at the European level to reverse negative trends, diversify research systems, and invest in human and infrastructure to benefit the long term future.
This document describes an investing strategy called "Upgrades and Revisions 2" that has historically generated strong returns. The strategy screens for stocks that have received positive earnings estimate revisions and rating upgrades in recent weeks. It uses several other fundamental metrics to identify stocks with strong earnings growth, reasonable valuation, and a track record of meeting or beating earnings expectations. Backtesting shows the strategy has averaged about 8-10 stock picks per month, with a high win rate of 74% and market-beating returns over many years.

THE SACRIFICE HOW PRO-PALESTINE PROTESTS STUDENTS ARE SACRIFICING TO CHANGE T...indexPub
The recent surge in pro-Palestine student activism has prompted significant responses from universities, ranging from negotiations and divestment commitments to increased transparency about investments in companies supporting the war on Gaza. This activism has led to the cessation of student encampments but also highlighted the substantial sacrifices made by students, including academic disruptions and personal risks. The primary drivers of these protests are poor university administration, lack of transparency, and inadequate communication between officials and students. This study examines the profound emotional, psychological, and professional impacts on students engaged in pro-Palestine protests, focusing on Generation Z's (Gen-Z) activism dynamics. This paper explores the significant sacrifices made by these students and even the professors supporting the pro-Palestine movement, with a focus on recent global movements. Through an in-depth analysis of printed and electronic media, the study examines the impacts of these sacrifices on the academic and personal lives of those involved. The paper highlights examples from various universities, demonstrating student activism's long-term and short-term effects, including disciplinary actions, social backlash, and career implications. The researchers also explore the broader implications of student sacrifices. The findings reveal that these sacrifices are driven by a profound commitment to justice and human rights, and are influenced by the increasing availability of information, peer interactions, and personal convictions. The study also discusses the broader implications of this activism, comparing it to historical precedents and assessing its potential to influence policy and public opinion. The emotional and psychological toll on student activists is significant, but their sense of purpose and community support mitigates some of these challenges. However, the researchers call for acknowledging the broader Impact of these sacrifices on the future global movement of FreePalestine.
