29. SUGGESTIONS: FOR VISA RENEWAL
EXHIBIT-B
Yes, it is hard to meet financial requirements for visa and medical fee in
advance
Yes. Visa fees is equivalent to half of my Scholarship per month. It
becomes hard to survive that month, while paying them. I highly
recommend visa fee to be covered by Monash merit scholarship
Yes, paying visa fees and other medical expenses are very
troublesome, with no money left for our monthly expenses.
Yes. Visa and medical fees can be covered by university because there
are other major expenses involved with relocating.
Paying the visa is a major burden.
Yes. It took me around one and a half year to go to proper specialist
which I would have done as soon as possible if I didn't have to pay fee
should the insurance had taken care of it in the first place.
Yes, as students, we don't have the instant money and it is sometimes
difficult to get it on emergency or to get our parents sending it right away
to us.
YES MAY BE DIVIDED IT INTO SMALL INSTALLMENTS
30. STUDENT EXPERIENCE REGARDING MEDICAL INSURANCE
EXHIBIT-C:
• The coverage policy is blur to a great extent. One of the
respondents have to pay from his own pocket which was
supposed to be covered by the insurance.
• The terms and condition should be clearly described to new
students so that one should know the extent of its coverage
and plans its finances.
• The claim period is too long, almost a month
• Alternatives should be looked into that provides better
facilities other than the reimbursement process
• Alternative mode of payment should be introduced which
saves students to pay from their own pockets and then
waiting for the reimbursement.
So for Malaysians, we decided to split it to students who live outside and inside the Klang Valley.
As you can see here, the distribution of Malaysian students who are under the Merit scholarship, receive external funds and are on tuition fee waiver are the same, regardless of whether they live in Klang Valley or not
You would expect relocation costs to differ
Students that live outside Klang Valley would spend more when relocating with the majority of students spending more than RM 2000
Whereas the majority of students that live in Klang Valley don’t bear any relocation costs
On the next slide, we have the breakdown of these costs
Outside Klang They would have to rent a place near the university subjected to deposits
Inside Klang for the 41% that did bear relocation costs, deposits make up a great portion of their spending
Took out 3% for left
Took out 3% and 2% for the right
For both inside and outside just over a 1/3 spend 1K-2K
1/3 of students outside Klang Valley spend 2K-3K while 1/3 of students inside Klang Valley spend less than 1K.
Outside Klang Valley most of their money goes towards their rent, then food.
Inside Klang Valley most of their money goes to student loans, car insurance and food.
Compared to international students, Malaysian students living outside Klang valley would travel back to their hometown more frequently.
Most students spend less than 250RM for a round trip
- deposit… and then furniture
Part time jobs:
Students ask to create on campus part-time jobs (admin, in-office, lab etc.) due to the following reasons:
To minimize the distraction from their research
It’s not possible for International Students
It will generate extra income for students who might face financial difficulties
Payment for extra hours of teaching/marking/lab/etc.
- Although it is stated that a student must commit 10 hours for the Teaching hours, the vast majority of the students claim that they spend more than the designated time to execute their tasks. As such, the payment for over time is asked by the students
Personal bonuses for publications:
- Some students ask if it is possible to receive a personal bonus/rewards for the publications.
Provide affordable healthy food choices
- Many students agree that their financial situation can be controlled, given the very strict and well-thought financial planning, such as eating at affordable places, restricting their outside activates etc. It is stated by the very same students that Monash lacks of choices for “healthy food”. Most of the food choices, which are low in price, are not necessarily good in nutrition.
