2. Research on Horror Genre Films
Horror film is a film genre seeking to play on the audiences primal fears. They often feature films
with scenes that startle the viewer. However, horror genre film isn't just horror but they include
a mixture such as fantasy, supernatural and thriller genres.
Horror films often deal with the viewers nightmares, hidden fears, revulsions and terror of the
unknown. Most horror genre films can include many things such as , blood , ghost.
Aliens, vampires, werewolves, curses, demons , gore, torture, vicious animals, monsters
, zombies and serial killers, but supernatural genre films are not always horrific.
The influence horror genre films have created were rising in the 1990’s were the horror film
that came out was ‘the scream’ most teenage people started copying it and earned a lot of
money such as the first movie which got 6 million and the third movie got 101 million pounds.
The role of women and how they see them selves have all altered on the arrival of horror genre
films and so have the men who express the fears of women and see them as the monsters.
Horror genre films not only have disturbing images but also have horrific soundtracks and the
location is so dark to play with the fears of the audience, mostly these genre films are always in
high age certificate such as 15 and 18, this shows that they are only for teenagers and adults who
enjoy watching horror movies.
3. Two plot ideas
Our first idea was to do it in college, but this Our second idea is to do it in Hyde park right
idea was bad because college is a place with next to college. Hyde park is a great place to
lights that need to be switched on all the make a horror genre film because Hyde park
time, its not dark all the time in college. Also has many trees and bushes where the people
the college environment can be noisy with the in the film can hide. The place is always low
students so its not really a good place. Also key lighting in some parts because of the trees
the sounds that we are going to use in our so we thought it was a perfect place to film
trailer wont be appropriate in college our trailer.
In addition, the college is also not very dark as Moreover, we are going to use a lot of sounds
we need a dark atmosphere to make it that will be good to use in Hyde park as it is an
dramatic and to have realism on the film to open place, therefore we think we are going
make it interesting to watch the film. to stick with Hyde park as our location.
4. Location
We are thinking to set the location in a dark place so we’ve thought of Hyde park as it has many
trees and that keeps the whole park dark, so it’s a good place and also the bushes, which make
good hiding places. However, if it doesn’t work out then we will change the place and do it
somewhere else where it is dark. We want dark low key lighting places as this changes the moods
of the audience because it puts an intimidating feeling on them and most people prefer dark
horror genre films.
Horror genre films doesn’t specifically have to be set outside as the location but can be inside
too. However we are doing it outside as we will have more space to act for the trailer. Inside its
OK but people can use it just to make it look fearful for the audience.
I think the location is very easy to set for horror genre films because you just need a dark
place, but some people may need different places which can be hard to set.
5. Sound track
There is going to be many different sound tracks in our horror genre film such as :
• Scream
• Running
• Tiredness
• Slashing noises
• Ambient sounds like owls hooting to make it intimidating because it’s a horror genre.
Many horror films use really good soundtracks, this is what we want to achieve when we finish
our trailer. Moreover, we are going to use speed of sound in our trailer. For example when
someone is running we are going to put the speed up so it looks like their running fast and it
becomes slow steadily when they are about to stop. So in our trailer when we make it there is
going to be a lot of tracking to do.
6. Typical directions
Cinematography- In our trailer we are going to be using a lot of angles and shots. A shot that we
are mostly going to use is close up shot they are mostly to show our feelings and we are going to
have quite a lot of these in our trailer.
Also we are planning to use a lot of wide shots because we would have to show all the people
who are going to be in our film.
Editing- in our film trailer we are going to be using fades in and out to show different parts of the
film and make it realistic for people to watch. There’s also going to be slide transitions to put
effect on the film trailer and to make it dramatic.
Mise-en-scene- we are all going to be dressed normally, but we are going to use a lot of props in
our film trailer like knifes, blood etc. These things are all going to be put to put realism and have
affect on the audience that are going to be watching it.
Sound- The sounds that we are going to use are going to be intimidating therefore we have used
a 15 certificate category for the film and a 12A in the trailer. We will use sounds for
screaming, the slashing, cutting noises, ambient horror sounds for the background, running and
also sounds to show tiredness.
7. What is needed to achieve
The things that are needed to achieve is:
• Good sound tracks
• Good filming (use a tri-pod)
• Good editing
• Dress appropriate for the filming
• Show excellent facial expressions
• The location needs to be appropriate
• Also will need to stick to the plan or the ideas that we have made but could change some of
the ideas, to make it better to improve and get more marks for the project.
