  • Let’s consider two types of performance, starting with raw performanceYou can of course find reasonable raw performance with first generation clouds but when performance gets bumpy, some use throttling helps some; hurts others; getting what you pay for?However, for high-end performance needs, look at second generation clouds some first gen clouds w/ 1G LANs again more focus on scaling out to achieve performance fewer choices on the scale up side (cores, RAM)
  • First generation clouds have not fully conquered multi-tenancy tenants share everything: CPU, RAM why shouldn’t tenants get their own resources that they can count on?Performance can vary quite dramatically based on the activities of other tenantsThis impact can be felt in all areas of the cloud Servers – noisy neighbors, overbooking clouds Storage – shared storage has challenges with SAN controllers; customer pays or provider pays Network – 1Gbps DC LANs are too common; 10Gbps is much better – can depend on design; everything rides on the network; when it goes bad, so does everything elseThings needed for consistent performance include: greater isolation on servers higher and consistent IOPs on storage; even guaranteed higher throughput, lower latency on network
