Benito Pérez Galdós: A Prolific Spanish Writer
1. In 2020 the radio program "For three reasons" gave an account of
Benito Perez Galdós’life, just 100 years after his death.
Benito Pérez Galdós was born in 1843 in Las
Palmas de Gran Canaria where we can visit a house-museum holding a
large part of his personal objects and books.
He was a very prolific man: writer, musician, painter, draftsman,
politician and journalist. He was very hard-working and he was a very
committed man.
He lived and developed his working life in Madrid where la Biblioteca
Nacional opened the exhibition “Human truth” where they narrate his life.
He wrote 121 books, including novels, plays and National Episodes
about Spanish history.
He was responsible for many gatherings and exhibitions in some
museums, such as the Ateneo, of which he also became a member.
In the program they also talked about his sentimental life. He had
some girlfriends and wives. He fall in love with Emilia Pardo Bazán,
another writter, but their love relationship did not work because several
reasons including the fact that she was a countess.
He was considered a Nobel Prize nominee for literature.
He made a lot of friends: writers such as Leopoldo Alas Clarín, other
artists, and even some architects. He had an active social life.
In 1886 he became a deputy of the Socialist Party.
In 1912, after going blind, he went to live with his nephew also in
Madrid. Two years before his death he went to inaugurate a statue of
himself there.
He was a very important Spanish writer, of famous works like
“Fortunata y Jacinta”, and a passionate and hard worker who will never
be forgotten.
