Editor's Notes

  1. I’m Skooks Pong, self-taught engineer I love tinkering and solving problems I’ve been at Synapse, building engineering teams that specialize in developing new devices & experiences You may have seen some, like FuelBand A device designed to motivate you Instead of a device, I’d like to talk about a better quality of life enabled by biometrics I’m really excited about the future of biometrics, de-siloing information and the seamless interface they offer between the physical and digital world. Biometrics around for awhile What are biometrics, exactly? At their most basic: Biometrics quantify some piece of us. They offer identity AND insight Humans have been looking for ways to identify each other since the dawn of civilization NEXT 30,000 yrs cavemen signed paintings with handprints
  2. Last year Apple released iPhone 5s w Touch ID NEXT So humans have looked for ways to identify each other for a while
  3. So humans have looked for ways to identify each other for a while Now our devices are starting to do this for us Digitally encoding our characteristics Why are we doing this? Internet changing way we design experiences 15 years ago, hardware was hardware Now it’s connected to internet Smartphones learning about us We’ve offloaded day-to-day tasks to technology - no paper map Don’t want to memorize numbers, want to connect with friends Technology is concealing the transaction layer, removing burden from user NEXT The next major leap in improving our quality of life depends on integrating the three silos that identify you
  4. The next major leap in improving our quality of life depends on integrating the three silos that identify you A physical token capable of combining: Biometrics, the measurement of your distinct characteristics with Knowledge, the digital accounts that currently contain data about you NEXT Biometrics: unique characteristics
  5. Consider all the people you see throughout the day Walking through your neighborhood, how do you determine whether you recognize someone NEXT Using senses to analyze their features
  6. Using senses to analyze their features If you recognize enough features, you can positively identify someone Don’t need to think, it just happens We use the senses we are born with How do we identify people we don’t know? NEXT Consider entering an unfamiliar bar
  7. Biometrics: unique characteristics Sight Smell Voice Touch NEXT Token: physical possession
  8. Consider entering an unfamiliar bar We use ID’s (tokens) to verify identity Anti-counterfeit Includes key biometric information Combine these and identity is verified NEXT Includes key biometric information
  9. Includes key biometric information Combine these and identity is verified NEXT Go to Deli
  10. Token: physical possession Keys Passport License NEXT Knowledge: digital accounts
  11. Go to Deli Debit card is token Add knowledge requirement of PIN Sales person asks to see ID to biometrically verify me NEXT By layering the tools - biometrics, knowledge, and token - we enhance security
  12. Knowledge: digital accounts Username Password PIN NEXT Consider all the people you see throughout the day
  13. Have you ever misidentified a friend? Thought you recognized an identifiable feature of theirs, or article of clothing You run up to say hi NEXT But when they turn around, you realize you’ve never seen them before!
  14. But when they turn around, you realize you’ve never seen them before! There is weakness in single points of ID. NEXT We are a collection of lots of recognizable pieces
  15. Current paradigm is username / password Using knowledge to authenticate you And it’s worked for a while But it doesn’t scale, has become a burden We know single points of data don’t work Add security questions, log IP addresses Still not good representation of YOU! Google Authenticator seeks to add a second factor, requiring physical possession Nymi too, leveraging one of your biometrics NEXT You are not defined by body shape or favorite ball cap
  16. “Internet-first” modality Computer has become network of devices and sensors Experiences designed with digitalization and connectedness in mind Need better method of communicating to digital layer that we are each a unique human -- personalize interactions Need to achieve same completenes Need richer integrated data sets NEXT Smartphone=most personal computer ever built
  17. Smartphone=most personal computer ever built Capable of piecing together data to make our digital identity Allows us to participate in digital experiences Smartphone becomes smart token Why smartphone? Ubiquitous -- don’t leave home without it / extension of self Smart -- learns & integrates data Token -- physical possession Smartphone is physical embodiment of our digital personas NEXT For the smartphone to learn us, it needs to measure us through all available inputs
  18. For the smartphone to learn us, it needs to measure us through all available inputs physiologic, behaviometric, and vitals Allowing intimate knowledge = more identification and insight Being able to identify you ensures your privacy and security And understanding you enables insight How does personal computer learn these things from you? NEXT Like you, the smartphone is born with senses
  19. Like you, the smartphone is born with senses It encodes the physical world into data it can process and interpret Technology learns our unique physiologic, behavioral traits Location Keystroke dynamics Fingerprint scanners Voice and face recognition Smart token can leverage additional sensors it wasn’t born with, as well NEXT Magic of wireless technology, connecting additional sensors, allowing further encoding of our physical environment
  20. Magic of wireless technology, connecting additional sensors, allowing further encoding of our physical environment This can offer more insight into air quality mood hydration sleeping patterns temperature heart rate perspiration weight blood pressure These sensors become new inputs NEXT Your device holds more info on you than any piece of technology before it
  21. Your device holds more info on you than any piece of technology before it Online accounts contacts & birthdates location patterns purchase habits These are all pieces of your digital puzzle Exist in silos now On their own they don’t offer a very complete picture But it’s something our smartphones are getting closer to everyday NEXT Finally we have a platform to connect the dots
  22. Finally we have a platform to connect the dots The smart token can integrate your biometrics data and digital accounts to complete the picture through intelligent processing NEXT Security concern: “Digital completeness”
  23. Security concern: “Digital completeness” How can we address security concerns? 30% use PIN or lock combo on your phone to protect data Friction Biometrics can secure phones (lower friction) Instead, consider it a way to learn your touch It gains intelligence You are thousands of data points that collectively reflect you More knowledge phone learns = better recognition NEXT More phone learning = more security
  24. More phone learning = more security Think: You are they key You are authenticated by being yourself As it knows you, it too will learn the un-you Over time, this will better differentiate between others, and restrict access If my phone knows all my idiosyncrasies, it becomes nearly impossible to replicate my digital persona My phone becomes a beautiful brick I am the key NEXT Great news for privacy advocates!
  25. Great news for privacy advocates! Shift away from cloud databases where data has been hacked, and will be again We maintain ownership of all our information on our smart token We communicate our identification baseline This personal hardware becomes a new digital biometric A digital extension -- A sixth sense Allows to move beyond something arbitrary like a PIN, password, even fingerprint NEXT Imagine reducing your payment methods, bus pass, keys, identification tools, coupons into smart token
  26. Imagine reducing your payment methods, bus pass, keys, identification tools, coupons into smart token Eliminate identity theft and fraud Possession of card alone! But with a smart token, they’d need… Our team dreamt up ways this smart token could enable frictionless experience throughout your day NEXT [LEAD INTO VIDEO CAR]
  27. Consider another example: Movie You must take into account several variables What’s playing where What films have already been seen Preferences Jack loves violent action Suzie prefers raunchy comedy Jerry enjoys family films Weigh the variables, find an option Ends up being taxing How many of data points do our phones already know NEXT What your phone already knows:
  28. Phone knows: Time Location Can ask services to list films playing nearby in customizable time frame Location patterns of theaters you travel to most Rewards program you have at particular chain What is in your calendar With context Knows which films you’ve already seen Purchase history Genres, directors, actors you enjoy Phones can cross-reference When devices aware of you, your schedule, your preferences, they’re more useful NEXT [LEAD INTO VIDEO WAKE UP] Instead of setting an alarm, maybe bed monitors sleep cycle
  29. Fitness gets a lot of attention Underscored by influx of wearables Obvious area for biometrics Technology will get better at understanding us personally Continue to add wearable technology to our bodies, we’ll more accurately monitor our biometrics Insightful experiences that motivate us Network of sensors is your personal trainer Mark’s tried most of the fitness devices out there [LEAD INTO VIDEO RUN] NEXT [VIDEO RUN] Smart shoes, socks, and clothing
  30. Why is fitness important? Why are we talking about it? Exercise is preventative, Doctor always asks You have total control over - more we can empower.. There are other areas of health that can benefit from this as well. Health should be user empowered, more user control NEXT What causes asthma attacks
  31. What causes asthma attacks - Ryan Propellor Health Main idea = generate data from our surroundings without taxing the user No behavior change! Kept it familiar Add feature that triggers a data collection process NEXT Inhaler → bluetooth → mobile phone → app
  32. Inhaler → bluetooth → mobile phone → app Can see time of day, location, weather, elevation → more complete picture of what is causing the attacks We need to continue adding sensors to health devices to create more complete digital profile. Internet has empowered us to take control of health, but it’s not a good user experience So many databases NEXT Wouldn’t it be nice if our devices, using biometrics, could leverage all that context and knowledge?
  33. Wouldn’t it be nice if our devices, using biometrics, could leverage all that context and knowledge? These online tools are a wealth of information But need to be personalized Medscape Let’s you monitor drug conflicts What could we do with smart token monitoring us all hours of day -- diet, exercise, Rx More data = less cross-checking/fetching of info And expose data, with permission, to doctor NEXT Doctor has more insight
  34. Doctor has more insight Can see log of diet, exercise, prescriptions Body worn sensors filling gaps in our data picture Google contact lens monitors glucose Awareness is great, but it can enable a much larger experience! Like inhaler, the contact lens should trigger an event Info passed to the processor, smart token Knows what you need to eat, dietary restrictions, location, preferences, mood, even who you’re with Can recommend a venue that satisfies all criteria [VIDEO LEAD IN] NEXT [VIDEO CAFE] Once you arrive, you could be greeted and handed a menu
  35. Don’t have to feel guilty about what you ordered Your diet is now a living thing that works with you to achieve your goals What if we added sensors that monitor blood-alcohol levels, or drowsiness? Artificial intelligence takes away your keys Can improve on the way drug dosage and ingestion intervals are managed Can shift to a system that monitors us, administers drugs precisely as needed. How do we keep people out of the hospital? Biometric monitoring NEXT Continue patient monitoring when leaving hospital
  36. Continue patient monitoring when leaving hospital Tattooable sensors See more vital monitoring technology: smartphone connected heart rate, blood pressure, glucose, temperature monitoring Doctors alerted to changes when we leave, recommend feedback immediately Biometrics enables interactive post accute care NEXT Why stop there?
  37. Why stop there? We’ll continue moving sensors inside of us. Already have Pacemakers on our hearts Soon we’ll have robots in our blood streams A network of sensors that monitors our conditions constantly NEXT We will continue to move technology closer to ourselves until we reach the point of true singularity
  38. We will continue to move technology closer to ourselves until we reach the point of true singularity We are seeing biohacking and biointegration Input/Output methods with our bodies via nerve endings Future where we have total control Systems born with v. systems we add? Is altering or adding to the body really that different? Can we add functions to our living systems to be more compatible with technology? But That’s a long way off NEXT First, we must break the current silo paradigm
  39. First, we must break the current silo paradigm Starts with integrating data from our growing network of sensors And adding human approach to the data To create complete digital representations of ourselves NEXT Biometrics will become the way our devices measure, identify, understand and provide contextually aware insight into our lives
  40. Biometrics will become the way our devices measure, identify, understand and provide contextually aware insight into our lives The future of biometrics isn’t 1984, or Terminator or Minority Report. Our personal devices - systems we do control - will learn and measure us, taking the shape of ourselves - digitally. Digital representation can communicate our existence and identity to the environment, seamlessly meshing the physical and digital worlds The future of biometrics depends on integration Breaking the silos is what makes this all possible. Recognize we are stuck in a lock and key, username / password paradigm Lets break the paradigm and shift to using this unique digital….?? Better security and more insight With my uniqueness as the key, I can be comfortable with the notion that our phones are going to contain a digital representation of ourselves. Enabling a sixth sense within us END- THANK YOU
