Swati Maskeri is a textile designer based in Bangalore, India. She has over 30 years of experience working in textile design and craft development. Currently, she is the Dean of the School of Foundation Studies at Srishti Institute of Art, Design & Technology. Previously, she has held roles as a faculty member and head of the textile design department at Srishti Institute, and has worked as a design consultant for various companies. She specializes in hand-woven fabrics and works closely with weavers in India.

HIGHLIGHTS
Currently working on completing ‘Wool weaving stories’ - Kutch & Scotland, a ReSIde residency project sponsored by
Creative Scotland.
Currently working with two silk sari weavers in Yelahanka, Bangalore in an independent capacity to create contemporary
products for Fashion such as stoles & sarees as well as Home textiles. My label TUNI sells in select museum and gallery
shops in the USA and UK.
Participated as a Design expert in the INDEX design challenge 2010 Advisory workshop that took place in Copenhagen,
Denmark in February 2011.
Conducted a fifteen-day participatory Design development workshop in embroidery as a Livelihood generation
programme for Urban poor women in Bangalore, in February 2010 sponsored by DCH, Ministry of Textiles, Govt of India.
Successfully completed a one-month course in Management for Women Entrepreneurs at IIM, Bangalore in May 2009.
Attended a four-day International Natural Dye Symposium organised by UNESCO, The Crafts Council of India &
Dastakar Andhra at Hyderabad in November 2006.
Facilitated a fifteen-day module on developing a collection & presentation skills with the Rabari embroidery women in
Kala Raksha Vidyalaya, Kutch, Gujarat in September 2006.

Sandur Kushala Kala Kendra, Sandur, Karnataka in January 2006 sponsored by DCH, Ministry of Textiles, Govt of India.
Designed and conducted a three-day workshop on design methodology and ideation for dhurrie and zamkhana weavers
from Kinnhal (Bellary District, Karnataka) sponsored by KHDC and organized by NID Bangalore Cell in April 2005.
Jointly conducted a three-day workshop on design methodology and ideation for weavers and tailors at DESI in Heggodu
(Shimoga District, Karnataka) in December 2004.
Participated in a workshop on Understanding Markets: Marketing Handlooms conducted by Dastkar Andhra, Hyderabad
in June 2004.
Helped document the workings of DESI, a rural-empowerment NGO based in Heggodu (Shimoga District, Karnataka) in

Attended a one-week workshop on Master Class in Teaching Sustainable Design conducted by ICIS in Copenhagen,
Denmark in September 2003.
Assisted in the design and execution of a dynamic and participative seminar in August 2003, on design intervention for
craft development in South India. The varied interests of different group members like designers; NGOs, industry and
government governed the seminar content.
Conducted a workshop on facilitative design development with Kasuti embroidery craftswomen at Sandur Kushala Kala
Kendra (Bellary District, Karnataka) in August 2002.
Co-conducted a course titled Designer as Facilitator for a multi-disciplinary group of students in July 2002, aimed at
helping them effectively facilitate design development amongst craft groups.
Assisted in conducting a workshop called ‘Aagaman – Listening to Craft’ and an exhibition titled ‘Beyond the Crafts
Bazaar’ in May 2002, aimed at rejuvenating Government intervention in the area of craft development.
Facilitated a collaborative workshop in February 2002 between design students and DWARKA, an NGO assisting
Kalamkari craftspeople at Sri Kalahasti, to facilitate new product development based on traditional crafts. Products
developed during this workshop were displayed at the ‘Beyond the Crafts Bazaar’ exhibition in May 2002.
Attended Asia Pacific Embroidery Seminar organized by Crafts Council of India at Hyderabad in December 2000.
Conducted a one-day introductory workshop on Trends and Interpretations in Textile Design for the employees of Co-
optex, organized by NID Bangalore Cell in November 2000.
Conducted several workshops for urban slum-dwelling women between 1996 and 1998, to facilitate hand-embroidery
skill development as well as product development. Products developed by these women were sold through catalogues
across US and European markets by the company ‘Market Place’.
Worked closely with the traditional weavers of Shantipur (West Bengal) to design and develop multiple collections of
fabrics for Ritu Kumar between November 1993 and April 1994. (Student project)
Won the First Prize in the 1993 International Wool Secretariat Student Woolmark Shawl Design competition in December
1993. Prize included sponsorship by the International Wool Secretariat and the Wool Club to attend the 24th
International Fashion Week in Hongkong. Presented a report on the annual fashion trends in Hongkong.
Documented the traditional weaving styles of Kotpad and Mirganguda weavers in Orissa, and developed designs based
on these styles for Oxfam India in June-July 1992. (Student project)
Developed a full range of furnishing fabrics for a farm-house for the Vallabhdas family, with special focus on
personalized space design using natural colours, materials and lighting in January 1992. (Student project)
Developed a collection of woven fabric styles for suiting, trousers and jacket material for GSL Fabrics, Mumbai in August
