Cutting Car Use at Millmead Centre
1. Working with businesses to cut car
use and increase active journeys
Margate, East Kent
“We used to deliver to the centre by van twice a week, now
we deliver by bike and trailer. I cycle to work every day now
and I’ve saved £126 on bus fares in the last three months.”
Jamie, employee of Millmead Children’s Centre

The Travel Challenge
resulted in:
£

staff participation
Sustrans is a registered charity in the UK No. 326550 (England and Wales) SCO39263 (Scotland)
policy, and their environmental policy.
Key areas identified for improvement were to:
• alleviate traffic congestion in the car
park, especially in the morning when
children are dropped off at the centre
• encourage more staff to travel actively
• reduce business travel costs
• explore alternative ways to make the
frequent, short journeys to deliver
produce from the allotment to the
children’s centre.
Sustrans’ solution
Sustrans delivered an online Travel
Challenge in the East Kent area. Providing
a friendly, fun and competitive tool to
encourage sustainable travel and increase
physical activity.
The Challenge was delivered over four
weeks with great results. The Millmead
Children’s Centre won the 21-50
employee size category.
Sustrans is supporting the centre to
develop a workplace travel plan, and has
also serviced bikes to help them travel
actively. As a result of this work, fruit and
vegetable deliveries to the centre are now
made by bike rather than van.
