2. Agrogorestry and Environmental service
• During the past decade, there has been increased interest in
mechanisms linking supply and demand of environmental services.
The environmental services of greatest interest include
• carbon sequestration,
• watershed protection
• and biodiversity conservation.

4. Role of AF system in conserving biodiversity
• Agroforestry is increasingly being acknowledged as an integrated land use
that can directly enhance agrobiodiversity and contribute to the
conservation of landscape biodiversity,
• Increase, diversify and sustain rural incomes as well as reducing habitat loss
and fragmentation
• AF practices may provide to watershed functions, retaining carbon in the
plant–soil system, and, most recently, by supporting the conservation of
biological diversity (McNeely and Scherr 2003; Schroth et al. 2004).
• It is an insitu agrobiodiversity conservation technique

5. AF and Biodiversity........
• Furthermore, Schroth et al. (2004) identified and discussed three roles of
agroforestry in biodiversity conservation on a landscape scale;
• The provision of supplementary, secondary habitat for species that tolerate
a certain level of disturbance;
• The reduction of rates of conversion of natural habitat in certain cases;
• The creation of a more habitat remnants compared with less tree-
dominated land uses, which may support the integrity of these remnants
and the conservation of their populations.

6. AF and Bio......
• AF practices benefit biodiversity through in-situ conservation of tree species
on farms
• Provision of suitable habitat for plant and animal species on farmland.
• AF systems maintain a level of biodiversity that is lower than that of the
original forest but higher than that of monocultures,
• AF provide suitable habitat for a number of forest-dependent species.

7. AF and Bio.....
• Managing for a diversity of plant communities and habitats (i.e., woodlands,
grasslands, wetlands, shrubs, row crops) will also tend to promote a diversity
of wildlife on your property.
• AF practices including alley cropping, windbreaks, forested riparian buffers,
silvopasture and forest farming, will provide opportunities to manage for a
diversity of plant communities and habitats that have the potential to
benefit the wildlife resource.

8. • AF can also provide the means that enables landowners to improve
habitats for wildlife on their property while offering alternative sources of
income to the farm.
• AF contributes to the conservation and protection of biodiversity, including
that of both wild species and species more directly related to agricultural
production (Boffa 1999; Buck et al. 2004; Cunningham et al. 2002;
McNeely 2004)
