 Employed full-time in Orthopaedics as a Level 1 nurse
 Then employed part time in Immunology working with clients with HIV,
rheumatoid arthritis and immunological disorders
1984-85: Completed an 18 month Child Health Care Course through the Plunkett
Society Auckland NZ
 In this role I worked full time as a Community Child Health Care Nurse due to
my Maori heritage, in Mangere, South Auckland in a low socio economic area,
with a high crime rate and high infant mortality rate
 In this role I worked in open clinics, did home visits if mothers hadn’t attended
clinic, encouraged immunisation and follow up and worked with families around
education and contact tracing when there was a Tb, measles and chicken pox
outbreak Most of the families were of Samoan, Cook Islander, Niuean, Tongan
and Maori descent as well as white NZ’ers
 I attended case conferences related to mental health, sexual abuse and domestic
violence where we tried to unite these children with their relatives if the current
home situation was unsafe
 This was a very challenging job which I absolutely enjoyed where cultural
sensitivity, empathy, good listening skills, understanding and being open minded
was imperative if you wanted to educate families
 There was also a large Black Power and Mongrel Mob bikie population and this
could be very scary at times, which required open mindedness and sensitivity

 This included working in theatre, A&E, orthopaedic out patients, specialist
orthopaedic wards and the spinal injuries unit
