The Crisis - The Decade – The 80’s
Major factors were:
Poor quality of power to the consumers
Abnormal average transmission and
distribution loss
Poor availability of transmission lines
1980: the Rajadhyaksha Committee on
Power Sector Reforms
August,1989 : Policy Decision to form a
National Power Grid
Objective : integrated operation of the
Central and Regional Transmission
Systems
 NPTC was incorporated on 23rd October, 1989 With an
authorized capital of Rs 5,000.00 Crore
 By 1st April, 1992, the Company took over the Transmission
and Operations owned by the central power generating
companies such as the NTPC, NHPC, NEEPCO, NLC, THDC,
NJPC.
 In October 1992, the National Power Transmission
Corporation’s name was changed to Power Grid Corporation
of India Limited (PGCIL), as we know of it today.
 The journey took off with an asset of 22,228 ckt kms of
transmission line, 35 electric sub-stations and transmission
capacity of 12,101 MVA in 1992.
Every single tower, every
single ckt km of transmission
line built by Powergrid are
saga of bravery, struggle,
sacrifice, dedication and
commitment by the
employees.
The total transmission network is
spread over the entire length and
breadth of the country.
Passed through plains and hills,
Canals and Rivers, Desert and
Dense Forest.
Each category involving deep
difficulty, danger and fatality.
One most complicated issue was,
“Right of Way (ROW)…to develop
high intensity transmission corridor in
an environment friendly manner
including protection of flora and
fauna”.
Many employees had been
victims of physical attack by
men in villages due to dispute
over ‘ROW’ and by animals in
forests,
in course of constructing
towers and laying transmission
lines.

Highly reliable and efficient transmission of
power with frequency stability, smooth,
uninterrupted availability of transmission
line within State, Region and Nation.
This has been possible due to Public Sector
culture of people orientation and matching
workforce with Dedication and Efficiency.
Now in the name of bringing greater efficiency
(than 99.82%!) the Modi Government has
announced to handover a great portion of this
National Asset to private corporates under
National Monetisation Pipeline (NMP) policy.

 Notified as the CTU under the Electricity Act on
November 27, 2003
 This was the crucial job of planning and
co-ordination of transmission of electricity
through the Inter-State Transmission System
 The responsibility of planning and co-
ordination of transmission of electricity through
the inter-state transmission system
 October 1991: North Eastern and Eastern grids were
connected
 March 2003: WR and ER-NER were interconnected
 August 2006: North and East grids were interconnected
forming Central Grid
 December 2013: Southern Region was connected to Central
Grid in Synchronous mode with the commissioning of
765kV Raichur-Solapur Transmission line
 1,72,154 circuit kilometer (ckm) Transmission

 264 sub stations
 2,73,000 Electric towers
 Transmission capacity of 4,64,292 MVA
 66,922 km of telecom network in 714 locations
of 206 cities in India
 Business in overseas in 20 countries
 Excellent Physical Performance with a Line
availability of over 99.82%
 Starting from an authorized total share capital
of Rs. 5,000 Crore
 Total income earned in the Financial year
2019-2020 was Rs. 38,670.96 Crore
 Net profit was Rs. 11,059.40 Crore after tax
deduction

2021 was Rs. 40,823.53 Crore
