Origin: Northern provinces of North
Holland and Friesland of the
Netherlands
Characteristics
• Color patterns of black and white or red and white
• Calf weighs 90 pounds or more at birth
• Holstein heifers can be bred at 15 months of age
• Holstein females calve for the first time between 24 and 27
months of age
• Holstein gestation is approximately nine months
• Mature body weight: Male: 800-900 kg Female: 500-650 kg
• Average milk production: 9000kg per lactation
32. Jersey
The Jersey breed originated on the
Island of Jersey, a small British island
in the English Channel off the coast of
France. The Jersey is one of the oldest
dairy breeds
Characters
• Vary in color from light red to black
• The switch may be black or white
• The muzzle is black with a black encircling ring
• It is called true dairy breed
• The cows have straight top lines, level rumps and sharp withers
• They have excellent udders, both in shape and attachment
• Mature body weight: Male: 600-700 kg Female: 500 kg.
• Average milk production: 4500kg per lactation (5.3% butter fat)
33. Sahiwal
The Sahiwal originated in the dry
Punjab region which lies along the
Indian-Pakistani border. The Sahiwal is
one of the best dairy breeds in India
and Pakistan
It is tick-resistant, heat-tolerant and noted for its high resistance to
parasites, both internal and external.
Cows average 2270 kg of milk during a lactation
Their color can range from reddish brown through to the more
predominant red, with varying amounts of white on the neck, and the
underline.
In males the color darkens towards the extremities, such as the head,
legs and tails
34. Red Sindhi
The Red Sindhi originated in the
Pakistani state of Sind but due to its
hardiness, heat resistance and high
milk yields they have spread into
many parts of India and at least 33
countries in Asia, Africa, Oceania and
the Americas
Under good management conditions the Red Sindhi averages over
1700 kg of milk after suckling their calves but under optimum
conditions there have been milk yields of over 3400 kg per lactation
The average body weight of cow 340 kg
Bulls average body weight of 420 kg
They are normally a deep, rich red color but this can vary from a
yellowish brown to dark brown
Males are darker than females and when mature may be almost black
on the extremities, such as the head, feet and tail
35. Hariana
The Hariana a Bos indicus breed used for
draft purposes in northern India where they
are found.
They are well suited to fast road work. While
females are kept primarily for breeding of
oxen, they are also milked. The breed
averages 1400 kg of milk per lactation but
high producing animals will produce over
2300 kg in a single lactation
The breed belongs to the shorthorned type of zebu and is grey
or white. The average cow weighs 310 kg and the average bull
430 kg
36. Murrah
Murrah breed of buffalo, the pride of
Haryana, is a milk type animal
The home tract of Murrah buffalo is Rohtak,
Jind and Hisar districts of Haryana (India)
It is also found in Nabha and Patiala
districts of Punjab (India) and around Delhi
Body weight : The average body weight of males, 550 Kg and the
females, 450-Kg
Age at fist calving : 3 years but we have also the buffaloes, which
calved at 3 years with good milk production
Inter-calving period : 400 to 500 days
Lactation period : 300 days
Milk yield: 14 to 15 litter but upto 31.5 Kg milk production had also
been recorded.
37. Nili-Ravi
The Nili-Ravi buffalo is a milk type of buffalo
breed. They are found mainly in Lahore,
Sheikhupura, Faisalabad, Sahiwal, Multan
and Bahawal Nagar districts in Punjab
Province. Their color is black and their
average weight at maturity is 800 kg for the
male and 525 kg for the female
They have a wedge shape, massive frame, small curly horns, and wall
eyes.
They often have white markings on the forehead, face, muzzle and legs
and white switch of tail (buffaloes with such markings highly desired
and popularly called "Panj Kalian")
They have a large, strong udder and are generally docile
Average age at maturity is 30 months in males and 36 months in
females.
38. Merino
This is the main representative of the Merino
breed in Australia and is found in extremely
high number throughout NSW, Queensland,
Victoria and Western Australia
The strain is large framed and relatively plain bodied,
producing a heavy fleece which is soft handling and of good
color with a fiber diameter of 20-22 microns
Staple length is approximately 90mm
39. Rambouillet
The Rambouillet breed originated with Spain's
famed Merino flocks, which were known from the
earliest times as producers of the world's finest
wool
Mature Rambouillet rams weigh between 250 and 300 pounds (113-
135 kg), ewes range from 150 to 200 pounds (68-90 kg)
Mature ewes will have a fleece weigh of 8 to 18 pounds (3.6-8.1 kg)
with a yield of 35 to 55 percent
The fleece staple length will vary from two to four inches (5-10 cm)
and range in fiber diameter from 18.5 to 24.5 microns or 60 to 80 for
the numerical count
40. Black Bengal
• This breed is found in the Bengal, Bihar and Orissa regions of
northeastern India and throughout Bangladesh.
• They are a meat breed which are small to dwarf in stature.
• Usually black it is also found in borwn, white or gray.
• The breed has a short coat and ears and is bearded.
• The breed is known for excellent mutton and skin quality
• The Black Bengal is a prolific breed
• Multiple births are common, twins or triplets are born in twelve or
fourteen months of age doe
• Two kiddings are possible in a year
• The milk production capacity is poor
• The body weight of adult buck varies from 19 to 30 kg and that of
doe, 13 to 22kg.
41. Saanen
The Saanen dairy goat originated in
Switzerland, in the Saanen Valley.
Saanen does are heavy milk producers
and usually yield 3-4 percent milk fat. It
is medium to large in size (weighing
approximately 65kg)
Saanens are white or light cream in color, with white preferred.
Small spots of color on the hair are allowable, but not desirable.
The hair should be short and fine
Ears pointing forward
The face should be straight or dished.
The breed is sensitive to excessive sunlight and performs best in
cooler conditions
