bipolar disorder and to prevent migraine
headaches.They are also used in the prevention of
seizures.

11. MECHANISM OF ACTION
ā¢ The mechanism of action is not Fully understood.The drug
acts on gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA),An inhibitory
amnio acid neurotransmitters.GABA receptor activation
serves to reduce neuronal excitability.

ā§« Absorption - Rapidly and completely absorbed
orally.
ā§« Distribution - 80%-90% protein bounding.
ā§« Metabolism - Metabolised in liver.
ā§« Excretion - it is excreted by urine.
ā§« Half life - 9 to 16 hours.
ā§« It is also crosses placenta.
17. NURSEāS RESPONSIBILITY
ā¢ Check whether the patient is allergic to this drug
ā¢ Monitor vital signs
ā¢ Check for respiratory depression
ā¢ Raise side rails
ā¢ Observe for side effects like hangover, dizziness,
confusion.

ā¢ Teach non pharmacological ways to induce sleep
ā¢ Suggest to urinate before taking sedative hypnotics to
prevent sleep disruption
ā¢ Instruct to avoid alcohol and antidepressants,
antipsychotics and narcotic drugs to avoid respiratory
depression.

food to reduce GI irritatin.
