1. Corporate
Partnerships
Of the many buzzwords pervading current approaches to development, “partnerships”
provides one of the most ambiguous. Qualities associated with partnerships include ‘a
joint commitment to long terms interaction, shared responsibility for achievement [and
also failure], reciprocal obligation, equality, mutuality and balance of power

Ethical Corporation?
CSR Agenda?
A limited company pays less Corporation Tax when it gives the following to R.I.S.E.:
money
equipment or trading stock (items it makes or sells)
Land, property or shares in another company (shares in your own company don’t qualify)
employees (on secondment)
sponsorship payments
Ltd can claim tax relief by deducting the value of donations from total business profits before it
pays tax.
Therefore synergies with RISE are needed

•Royal Dutch Shell PLC has highest tax liability over the years, but decreasing in profits. They also get a
negative press in the media that they are an Unethical Business.
WHERE AS
•Virgin Media Communications can be seen to have sustained their market position over the last 3 years of
pre tax profits. When this is coupled with positive news stories about their CSR agenda they could be the
perfect partner.
Further research into pre tax profits and corporations tax liability in projections and forecasts would be
beneficial in hunting down Corporate Partners.
6. Corporate Partners:
Possibilities?
Google UK Ltd + Virgin Media Communications Ltd as
Corporate Partners
Google has Project Loon to increase the access to the Internet
in rural areas in India, but has low (£106,026) profits before
Tax compared to the top ten. Nevertheless Project Loon and
their 2,329 tech/business professionals can possibly volunteer
time to UK Schools
Virgin has both high tax liability (£5,934,000 profits before
Tax) and positive reported CSR Agenda (i.e. Scope Partner –
2015 and Enterprise Skill Training programmes). It provides a
possible sustainable funding stream in the purchase and
rollout of Wined-Up Laptops in rural India .
7. Project Loon
Many of us think of the Internet as a global community. But two-thirds of the world’s population
does not yet have Internet access. Project Loon is a network of balloons travelling on the edge of
space, designed to connect people in rural and remote areas, help fill coverage gaps, and bring
people back online after disasters.
8. Scope Partnership 2015 and Tech-Skills to SMEs
We love connecting people to the digital world to help them discover and experience its endless
possibilities. But we also believe in digital that’s good for the wider world. That means thinking more
about people, communities, businesses and places. It also means looking closely at how we go about
things. ‘Digital that makes good things happen’ is our vision and the story we want to be known for.

of Global Ultimate Owner
Alphabet INC
STRENGTHS
Google Loon Project widening Internet access to rural and remote areas of India (Indian
Government asks Google to pick “Teleco partner “- www.indianexpress.com News Jan,
2016)
WEAKNESSES
Tax liability means funding not realised by R.I.S.E,
OPPORTUNITIES
Tech/Business Staff as volunteers going into UK schools in 2016 Enterprise Challenge
THREATS
Negative press in terms of offshore tax havens, and the reach of R.I.S.E in UK schools to
Generation Y may not be seen as strong enough for them to partner. The latter point
may be mitigated by R.I.S.E. with outreach workers in Wales, Scotland, Northern
Ireland through Charity Foundation Grants: i.e. Comino Foundation max of
£discretionary, Empowering Young People max of £60,000/Young Start Funds max of
£50,000 (Big Lottery Fund) [Source: GrantFinder, March 2016]
11. SWOT ANALYSIS
of Global Ultimate Owner
Liberty Global PLC
STRENGTHS
Provider of video, broadband Internet, fixed-line telephony and mobile services and
have a good history in funding charities(Scope, 2015)
WEAKNESSES
Not currently operating in India would need to use R.I.S.E government contacts.
OPPORTUNITIES
Expand into new markets and growth in 7th fastest economy by GDP mutuality in
broadening access to Internet in Rural India
THREATS
May try to steer the spending of RISE donations for share holders rather than RISE
objectives for example, “Liberty Global, we believe that corporate responsibility (CR)
can be good for our business and good for society. It's about how we do business and how
we deliver sustainable returns to our shareholders, while making the most of the
opportunities and benefits that our products and services create.” Maybe mitigated
through reciprocal obligations in CSR agenda and mutuality found in delivering project
Loon corporate partners and Charity objectives.
12. Google (Alphabet Inc) and Virgin Mobile
(Liberty Global PLC) as Corporate Partners
The control of money makes true partnerships impossible unless trust is
established in funding applications through partnerships that have:
Reciprocal obligations
New Poverty and Inequality Agenda: donors are pursuing partnerships with NGOs and NPOs in
attempt to overcome the failures of state led development. Corporate Donors may have
fears and anxiety over giving donations and funding, the case will have to be made by RISE
that tackles corporate partners negative perception of NGOs and NPOs. In the literature and
guidance it suggest these may include:
Poor communication
Lack of trust
Fear of censure
A Case For Mutuality
Need to develop agreements from the outset as to how the money is spent: I.e. Virgin
funding for wined-up laptops/computers is aligned with RISE objective to raise education
for young people (18 years -) in rural India . That may be best dealt with through projects
that look to the future of online learning . This supports Skill India goal to train 400 million
people by 2022, and overcomes the constraints of the traditional built environment of a
school and/or college campus , since we know India has the largest college age population
in the world of “125 million” (Economic Times, 6 March 2016).
