9. THE MUNICIPALITY OF JURBISE
Jurbise (in Picard Djurbize, in Dutch Jurbeke) is a
French-speaking municipality of Belgium located in
the Walloon Region in the province of Hainaut.
10. THE MUNICIPALITY OF JURBISE
Located between Mons and Ath, Jurbise is a rural
area composed of villages of Erbaut, Erbisoeul,
Herchies, Jurbise, Masnuy-Saint-Jean and Masnuy-
Saint-Pierre
The town hosts the Academy of Police Emilien
Vaes and the Royal Golf Club of Hainaut
12. BY FOLLOWING A SERIES OF WAYMARKED TRAILS,
WALKERS CAN DISCOVER BEAUTIFULLY LOOKED-
AFTER CHAPELS AND FARMS.
Among these are the Ferme de Saint-Moulin at Herchies, or the fine example at Gipleux
with its majestic entrance porch on which can be seen the coat of arms of the Counts of
Hainaut, dating from 1743. Architectural heritage is one of Jurbise’s real strengths,
something helped by its many châteaux, such as the Château des Viviers or the Château
d’Herchies which is also known as the Château d’Egmont (both of these are private
properties).
13. THE MUNICIPALITY OF JURBISE
The area has many attractions, such as the Locquet Fountain in Herchies,
whose water gushes from a sculpted blue stone, the work of Jean Bersoux, a
Soignies-based sculptor. The most surprising sight, however, remains the
«Chêne à clous» [" the nail oak"] at Herchies, which has been listed by the
Wallonia Region since 1985. Sports lovers can take to the many walking
routes to be followed around the area, or enjoy a game of golf at Hainaut’s
Royal Golf Club. With its folklore and series of local events, such as the
ducasses (local festivals) held in Jurbise, Herchies and Erbisoeul, the
procession in honour of Saint Bartholomew, or the beer festival, there’s an
opportunity for everyone to enjoy the convivial atmosphere for which the area
is known.
14. THE LEGEND OF THE STUDDED OAK («CHÊNE
À CLOUS »)
Finally, a sight not to be
missed is the «Chêne à
Clous» at Herchies, a very
unusual tree reputed to
have healing powers for
those with skin diseases.
The present oak was
planted in 1950, replacing
the previous tree which was,
most likely, more than four
hundred years old
