AISC Student Design Competition Entry
MY DESIGN for the American
Institute of Steel Contractors’
Annual Student Design Competition
was all about exploring how a building and
its program can evolve together through time.
This was brought on by the given program of the
building: a Library. Through research and observation
I decided to approach this design as a response to the
conflicted identity of what learning is to become in a future
dominated by technological advancements. The building was
therefore designed to change, both ideologically and physically, over
the course of its lifetime.

project was, for me, all
about having fun with design
on a number of levels of constraint.
First and foremost was the ‘client’: The American
Institute of Steel Contractors. As a result, the use of steel
as a dynamic component of both structural and aesthetic design
element is heavily stressed throughout. Additionally, within
the broader idea of a library becoming a more generalized
‘educational center’, I explored the limits of what a future
program for such a space might be. This resulted in a series
of connected but distinct ‘modules’ of space within the larger
envelope of the structural system, arrayed along a continuous
ramp . These spaces would then be free to accomodate any
potential programmatic shifts that the future might hold in
store for it. The exterior weathered-steel skin was likewise
designed to allow for continuous, day-today environmental
adjustments and accomodate for the ever-changing physical
environment as well as the cultural one.
THE COURTYARD Merriott Hotel and Aquatic Center addition
was approached as a "comprehensive studio", meaning it
required students to work in teams of two to develop a relatively
complete design in terms of structural systems and environmental
control systems. My teammate and I immediately focused on
the structural and associative aspect of designing a place for
interraction with water. Structurally, water adds massively to the
building loads, and due to the small lot size, extensive aquatic
program and downtown Denver location, we knew we'd need
to elevate elements of the pool function above the ground floor.
The emotional aspect of the pool function we approached with
the acknowledgment that such a program is not very common in
an urban environment, and therefore should be emphasized in
relation to the street by way of design. We developped a scheme
based on both concerns, utilizing a space frame approach to
the structural design of what we took to be a primary "bar" of
the pools. This frame reacted not only in a linear fashion to the
aquatic function's formal location but also sectionally in response
to the depths of the two pools in the bar. Other structural glass
elements along Curtis Street served to activate the sidewalk and
street environment and call out the uniqueness of the activities
housed within the structure. These include a large window meant
to show divers hitting the water (but not actually diving)right
next to the sidewalk to introduce
an element of surprise. There is
also a huge "picture window"
where swimmers in the fourth-
level pool can swim and occupy
a space directly above the
sidewalk, creating a dialogue
between the roles of public and
private space in an aquatic center
design.

ANOTHER way we created emphasis of the pool function was by
setting an orthographic structural grid that held the geometry
of the street, and breaking that geometry with the placement
of the aquatic functions. This necessitated another structural
intervention: the angled columns served as mediators between
the structural cores of the parking structure below to the space
frame holding the pool bar on its shifted axis on the fourth level
above. The latitudinal section below demonstrates both the
pool bar space frame and the large lobby below, bisected by the
angled columns.

A PART of the project
entailed putting together
some detail sections most
closely related to those in a DD or
early CD set. These were assembled
to give more detailed stuctural
and cladding information, and were
particularly challenging to convey due to
the very kinetic geometires and 3-dimensional
movement of the angled column and space
frame systems. The drawings on this and the
opposite page show how we proposed to approach
those challenges in a few key locations. On the
following two pages are a few images of models made
by my teammate and myself for the final presentation.
I am solely responsible for creating all of the graphics and
images shown on these and the previous two pages, my
teammate Ryan made the two colored models shown on the
next pages, and I made the context model in white board
and plexi.

Sun Valley Industrial Redevelopment

THE SUN VALLEY project was a group project focused on
redevelopping an existing industrial park site in Denver.
My portion of the site was the final phase out of six,
and involved the creation of both a residential complex
as well as a park that created a visual and pedestrian
pathway into the site. There were three prominent
influences on the design of both: a redevelopment plan
issued by the city of Denver concerning the area, a desire
to employ and start a dialogue about sustainable urban
water management, and finally spolia, or the utilization
of the 'ruins' of the old industrial site as tangible
elements in the design process. The lofts themselves
were designed to achieve flexibility, and were left
somewhat open-ended in acknowledgement of the fact
that they're phased to be built 20 years in the future.
The weathered steel screen element is designed to catch
rainwater and divert it down to detention ponds below.

THE FAIRMONT bar addition,
included within a contract
to renovate the historic
hotel’s lobby level corridors,
represented an opportunity
to conceieve, design and
detail a cohesive and yet
distinctively modern and ADA
compliant piece of integral
casework in the hotel’s Laurel
Court. Through several design
developments the final scheme
pictured here was selected
and approved. In addition to
this full-cycle design exercise,
the Fairmont Lobby Level
Renovation drawing set was
also the second issue for
construction executed entirely
under my supervision. A copy
of the full drawing set can be
provided upon request.

BOTH the Hotel Triton and Joule projects marked
some of the first opportunites to see my designs
actually become built in the real world according to
drawings that I had been responsible for. Although
the Triton deck is still currently under construction,
both were exciting, challenging and ultimately
rewarding experiences using Revit, SketchUp and
AutoCAD to craft cohesive contract documents,
to perform some level of on-site observation, and
finally to see my own ideas brought to life. A full
drawing set of both projects highlighting my own
role can be provided on request.

  • 3. 10’ 25’ 50’ 100’ AISC Student Design Competition Entry MY DESIGN for the American Institute of Steel Contractors’ Annual Student Design Competition was all about exploring how a building and its program can evolve together through time. This was brought on by the given program of the building: a Library. Through research and observation I decided to approach this design as a response to the conflicted identity of what learning is to become in a future dominated by technological advancements. The building was therefore designed to change, both ideologically and physically, over the course of its lifetime.   • 4. 10’ 25’ 50’ 100’ 6 7 IN MANY ways this project was, for me, all about having fun with design on a number of levels of constraint. First and foremost was the ‘client’: The American Institute of Steel Contractors. As a result, the use of steel as a dynamic component of both structural and aesthetic design element is heavily stressed throughout. Additionally, within the broader idea of a library becoming a more generalized ‘educational center’, I explored the limits of what a future program for such a space might be. This resulted in a series of connected but distinct ‘modules’ of space within the larger envelope of the structural system, arrayed along a continuous ramp . These spaces would then be free to accomodate any potential programmatic shifts that the future might hold in store for it. The exterior weathered-steel skin was likewise designed to allow for continuous, day-today environmental adjustments and accomodate for the ever-changing physical environment as well as the cultural one.

THE COURTYARD Merriott Hotel and Aquatic Center addition was approached as a "comprehensive studio", meaning it required students to work in teams of two to develop a relatively complete design in terms of structural systems and environmental control systems. My teammate and I immediately focused on the structural and associative aspect of designing a place for interraction with water. Structurally, water adds massively to the building loads, and due to the small lot size, extensive aquatic program and downtown Denver location, we knew we'd need to elevate elements of the pool function above the ground floor. The emotional aspect of the pool function we approached with the acknowledgment that such a program is not very common in an urban environment, and therefore should be emphasized in relation to the street by way of design. We developped a scheme based on both concerns, utilizing a space frame approach to the structural design of what we took to be a primary "bar" of the pools. This frame reacted not only in a linear fashion to the aquatic function's formal location but also sectionally in response to the depths of the two pools in the bar. Other structural glass elements along Curtis Street served to activate the sidewalk and street environment and call out the uniqueness of the activities housed within the structure. These include a large window meant to show divers hitting the water (but not actually diving)right next to the sidewalk to introduce an element of surprise. There is also a huge "picture window" where swimmers in the fourth- level pool can swim and occupy a space directly above the sidewalk, creating a dialogue between the roles of public and private space in an aquatic center design. This necessitated another structural intervention: the angled columns served as mediators between the structural cores of the parking structure below to the space frame holding the pool bar on its shifted axis on the fourth level above. The latitudinal section below demonstrates both the pool bar space frame and the large lobby below, bisected by the angled columns. 8 9

These were assembled to give more detailed stuctural and cladding information, and were particularly challenging to convey due to the very kinetic geometires and 3-dimensional movement of the angled column and space frame systems. The drawings on this and the opposite page show how we proposed to approach those challenges in a few key locations. On the following two pages are a few images of models made by my teammate and myself for the final presentation. I am solely responsible for creating all of the graphics and images shown on these and the previous two pages, my teammate Ryan made the two colored models shown on the next pages, and I made the context model in white board and plexi.

Sun Valley Industrial Redevelopment Instructor: Christopher Koziol University of Colorado at Denver - Fall 2014 Team Leader | Studio Design Award Major Circulation Minor Circulation THE SUN VALLEY project was a group project focused on redevelopping an existing industrial park site in Denver. My portion of the site was the final phase out of six, and involved the creation of both a residential complex as well as a park that created a visual and pedestrian pathway into the site. There were three prominent influences on the design of both: a redevelopment plan issued by the city of Denver concerning the area, a desire to employ and start a dialogue about sustainable urban water management, and finally spolia, or the utilization of the 'ruins' of the old industrial site as tangible elements in the design process. The lofts themselves were designed to achieve flexibility, and were left somewhat open-ended in acknowledgement of the fact that they're phased to be built 20 years in the future. The weathered steel screen element is designed to catch rainwater and divert it down to detention ponds below. 14 15

THE FAIRMONT bar addition, included within a contract to renovate the historic hotel’s lobby level corridors, represented an opportunity to conceieve, design and detail a cohesive and yet distinctively modern and ADA compliant piece of integral casework in the hotel’s Laurel Court. Through several design developments the final scheme pictured here was selected and approved. In addition to this full-cycle design exercise, the Fairmont Lobby Level Renovation drawing set was also the second issue for construction executed entirely under my supervision. Although the Triton deck is still currently under construction, both were exciting, challenging and ultimately rewarding experiences using Revit, SketchUp and AutoCAD to craft cohesive contract documents, to perform some level of on-site observation, and finally to see my own ideas brought to life.
