CHRISTOPHER POWELL || PORTFOLIO
Constantly pushing the boundaries of design and his own technical skills, Chris grew
up in Akron, Ohio where he began his career as an illustrator and contractor. Later he
would attend Kent State University in Ohio to pursue a career in Architecture.
After graduation, his passion for design had him move West in a pusuit of a Master of
Architecture degree at the University of Colorado Denver. Here, his love for all things
design has flourished and pushed him to continue working in the field. This, along
with building and designing with his father growing up, made for a natural transition to
become a design professional.
When not designing and creating Artwork, Chris enjoys doing humanitarian work,
teaching, Swing Dancing, Mountain Biking, and Skiing.

LA PLATA CABIN
COLORADO OUTWARD BOUND SCHOOLS
MICRO CABINS V.2
Taking its design inspiration from the ring of lodgepole pines that it is nestled in, La Plata pulls you
from its entry into the outdoor room, where it captures the vertical nature of the trees through a bold
use of cedar cladding, a frame-less glass window, and an open roof. The cabin also speaks to the
introverted-extrovert in all of us, by having a folding wall that transforms the open nature of the cabin
into an oasis of solitude.

PALAZZO MONDERNO
GASTRONOMY CENTER
Taking the Palazzo as a building typology, the design pulls from various elements of these Italian
buildings as a precedent for design, as well as other architectural experiences within the city. These
elements were then modified and composed with modern architecture in mind. The idea behind this
was to create a new identity for the disconnected urban fabric of the area of Piazza Annigoni, while
relating back to the rest of the city as a whole. The program of food is steeped in Italian tradition with
cooking classrooms, restaurants, and a piazza geared towards the experience of food.

LOCAL MOTION
OFF the RAILS DESIGN COMPETITION
The two blocks of Mason Street between Mulberry and Laurel pose a vast variety of urban conditions
ranging from street front retail and commercial to small scale residential. This range of uses has
caused a conflicted identity for this area of Fort Collins in addition to safety and pollution concerns.
It calls for a solution which respects all existing uses and site conditions, yet brings a cohesive and
distinct identity.
Local Motion proposes to introduce a ribbon-like element comprised of vertical timber members to
create identity for the district, referencing both historical and contemporary culture. Its articulation
is parametrically generated, addressing the needs for privacy, public engagement, train visibility, safe
circulation, and pollution mitigation. These vertical timber members become expressive of the zeitgeist
of former locomotion. As rhythmic elements they create dynamic spaces and become storytellers of
old days traveling by train through the Rocky Mountains. Automotive travel becomes engaged with
passing trains and the experience of traveling through a Rocky Mountain pine forest - juxtaposed
by modern means of transportation. Additionally, moments of pause and activity are created for
pedestrians and cyclists to engage this sensorial experience. Select moments along the pedestrian
pathways create visual and auditory connection with passing trains.

MASLOW HEALTH COLLABORATIVE
INTEGRATED DESIGN STUDIO
The Maslow Health Collaborative aims to connect individuals to resources and activites that promote
positive lifestyle choices. Inspired by Abraham Maslow’s heirarchy of needs, the basic necessities
of human needs must rst be met in order for an individual to reach a point of transcendence. The
building allows one to evaluate his or her own needs and chose a path that will best aid in their pursuit
of happiness.
The absence of control over these types of illnesses can easily strip away a person’s sense of self-
empowerment. Due to this aspect, many face signi cant decreases in their health and overall well-being
not just from the e ects of the chronic illnesses but also from the lack of guidence in the situation.
By re-evaluting day-to-day habits, everyone can learn simple techniques to positively impact their
controlable health. Once these aspects are understood and implemented, those indivduals can go
onward to teach others, creating a benficial cycle.

When a person reaches the top of Maslow’s Heirarchy of Needs, they are said to be in a state of transcendence. At this point, said person can
pass on his or her knowldge to another individual, continuing the cycle. The tenth floor of the Maslow Health Collaborative allows for this time
of reflection. Part of the floor is designed as an interior spiritual garden.
