Indigenous people face unique challenges to their mental health and social emotional wellbeing due to the ongoing impacts of colonization including the loss of language and culture, racism, and intergenerational trauma. Promoting Indigenous perspectives of wellness as more than an absence of illness and strengthening connection to culture, community, and spirituality are key to improving mental health outcomes. Community-led, culturally safe practices that are trauma-informed show promise for holistically supporting Indigenous peoples' wellbeing.
