We have news to share with you. El Museo del Barrio has utterly demol-
ished—and reconstructed—its gallery walls in order to stage a labyrinthean
journey through cinematic space.
We have reinvented our gallery landscape to introduce the work of one of
Mexico’s great visionary cinematographers, Gabriel Figueroa. This ambitious
exhibition, UNDER THE MEXICAN SKY: Gabriel Figueroa—Art and Film, will
remain on view through June 27, 2015.
Experience the Mexican Revolution, the sumptuous beauty of open skies and
rising landscapes, the exploding majesty of the maguey, and the entrancing
eyes of María Félix.
UNDER THE MEXICAN SKY is a multi-sensory project, bridging numerous
fields of practice—including fine and performing arts, cinema, cinematic
technology, film history and cultural theory. The installation features film
essays projected on walls, paintings by Diego Rivera and Jose Clemente
Orozco; photographs by Edward Weston and Tina Modotti; prints from the
Taller de Gráfica Popular, and other canonical artists who exchanged
influences with Figueroa. This is just a peek at what’s new at El Museo.
