The re-emergence of heatpumps in industrial settings is only just beginning. Star Refrigeration has already delivered 30MW of capacity, half of which is at 90C. The real boom in this industry will come not from heat recovery in food factories (although this is important) but from new applications in larger indsutrial setting. These slides give the simplest of introductions to one such application- the distillation of ethanol. There will be countless reasons not to do this - BUT one that is certainly not valid is that there is a ready supply of waste heat on site. If there is then WHY? If this waste heat vanished then distillation and (evaporation and condensation) could be performed by a high temperature heatpump. This would save over 70% of the PRIME energy.
