Definition
It is the science of measurement and control
of process variables within a production or
manufacturing area
Example of process variables??
What does it deal with ??
• Measurement
 Control &
 Automation of processes

Dept. of ME, Bonam Venkata Chalamayya Engineering College (Autonomous)
Odalarevu, EG dist , AP
Why do we need ??
• Accelerated use of Instruments
 High rate of technological obsolescence
 Never-ending human comforts

What is the relevance with
Mechanical Engineering??
 Instrumentation Engineering involves the
planning, development and maintenance
of instruments that are used in the automated
systems
 Whereas Mechanical Engineering involves
the production and usage of heat
or mechanical power for manufacturing tools
and machines.

The Relevance
• Measurement is fundamental basis of all research, design
and development.
• It is necessary for measurement of different parameters,
for which it is theoretically designed, and compare
between theoretical values and actual values.
• It is a fundamental element of any control system.
• It is helpful in carrying out successful operation of any
system.
• For Ex. in a power plant, temperature, volume , pressure
of steam , coal input , also output voltage, current, phase
angel ,power etc. are required to be measured
