Perosis

2. Slipped Tendon or Perosis is metabolic
disease that causes deforming ,leg
weakness in chickens ,ducks & turkeys.
It is usually seen in poultry under six weeks
of age.
It results in flattened & enlarged hocks.
It is called as “Spraddle legs” if both legs are
affected.
4. Perosis is caused by the deficiency of
number of trace nutrients.
Primarily Manganese & Choline.
But Zinc ,Pyridoxine ,Biotin ,Folic acid ,&
Niacin may also be involved.
In Turkeys it may be an inherited
Galactosamine deficiency.
5. Short legs
Lameness
Distortion of Hock
Slipping of Achilles tendon
Malposition of leg distal to hock
In embryos parrot beak , shortened bones.
6. The back of the hock will look flat.
The bird won’t be able to fully straighten its
leg by itself.
The bird will likely exhibit pain.
The joint will become swollen.
Birds may peep or cry repeatedly.
7. Shortening and thickening
of long bones.
Tibia and metatarsus
bowed.
Shallow trochlea.
Lateral slipping of tendon.
8. Lesions
Analysis of feed ( deficiency of Mn ,Zn).
Differentiate from –
Twisted leg
Infectious synovitis
Rickets
Infectious arthritis
9. Provide starter and grower
diet that contain adequate
amounts of all trace
minerals and vitamins –
especially Mn & choline.
Most perosis affected flocks
will respond to
supplementation with Mn.
10. Do not give Ca in excess.
Repositioning of tendon can be done.
Wrap the joint area with sports tape to place
the tendon in place.
Use a hock cushion to protect the hock from
chafing.
