1. You are now a refugee. You can no longer stay in Syria, you have to flee. But to where? Europe? By means of
dilemmas you will discover the (im)possible choices of a refugee. Your goal: make sure you are safe.
Somewhere.
Start your refuge
2. Who will you flee with?
Ramy, master student from Damascus Fida, teacher from Homs
Let’s go for Fida
3. Which route will you take?
In tears you look at the destruction. For years you’ve managed to cope in Homs. But now that your home is destroyed you want to leave Syria. Your
parents are staying and your brothers are in Jordan. Still, you decide to go to Europe. Friends have told you that there is a possibility to reach Europe
via Libya. But increasingly often you hear about success stories from the route via Turkey and Greece. What do you choose?
Let’s choose Turkey.
4. On your way in Turkey
For hours you hear nothing but the rumbling of the engine. You are bruised from bumping around in the loading area of the truck. You can’t manage to
sleep, as you’re trying to hold the other passengers tightly. Then, the truck stops abruptly. The smuggler who would bring you to Ankara put his head
under the piece of plastic covering you. “More money”, he gestures. “Otherwise the driver won’t continue.” Will you pay?
Let’s decide to not pay.
6. That wasn’t smart
A wise lesson. Being too stuck to your principles will not help you on this journey. Your smuggler wanted more money, that’s part of this world. You are
being confronted with reality the hard way. Now you are in the middle of Turkey. But you are lucky! After asking around at a gas station you can hitch
hike to Ankara. After that you can take a train to Istanbul. You barely lost any money. Now in your wallet: 9000 euros.
7. Looking for contacts
Istanbul is full of human traffickers. Syrians are taking you into the circuit. In coffee shops and cafes you meet different men you tell you that they can
help you. Many of your fellow Syrians go via the south, the Aegean Sea. But you also find a Facebook page: “Crossing no more Death at sea”. On this
page you learn about a land route, via the European part of Turkey to Bulgaria or Greece. What do you do? Sea or land?
Let’s go over sea.
8. Over sea, do you dare?
After four hours in a 10-person van you reach Izmir. From the Turkish coast you can almost touch Greece. Everyone here is looking for a good price to
cross. Talking to different people, you find several smugglers. One offers you a boot trip for €2000 including life vest. The other offers €1000 euro, but
then you will have to steer the boat yourself. This is a dangerous place, but you could use that €1000 euros very well.
Let’s offer to steer the boat
9. If we scroll down, we get a testimony
from a refugee in Izmir. Also, there is
a little information sidebar about why
refugees do not use cash to pay
smugglers.
10. Drowned before the coast of Lesbos
This is not a boat that is equipped for conditions at sea, you realize. Even though you know better, you get aboard the boat and seat yourself behind
the steering wheel. Once at sea the over-full boat is reaching dangerous angles. The water is dark and cold. The adrenaline is pumping through your
body. “Aim for that spot” the smuggler tells you while pointing in the distance. The strong waves hit the boat. People are panicking. A next wave throws
the boat over. Water, cold, you are trying to breathe. And then nothing.
