AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS
SCENE 1
AT THE MUSEUM
PRESENTER: Ladies and gentlemen, The Royal Museum of Art proudly
presents the world’s greatest jewel. From the far, far East, land of mystery and
wonder, the biggest and most precious diamond of the world. Behold “The Eye
of Buddha”!
(Curtains Open. We see the Royal Museum of Art and the opening ceremony of
a new exhibition. The Eye of Buddha, a big diamond, is on display. The
Minister of Culture and Justice is posing by the diamond. A reporter, Catherine
Montgomery, is taking pictures.Inspector Fix patrols the place. Enter Phileas
Fogg with a folder full of sheets of paper.)
FOGG: Enough is enough Minister. The City of London will not tolerate your
dirty business any longer.
MINISTER: Phileas… Phileas…Your unfounded accusations again.
(A piece of paper slips from Fogg’s folder. Fix picks up the paper.)
FOGG: Not this time, Minister. I have evidence!
FIX: Let me see!
(All the sheets of paper in the folder fly into the air. Fogg and Catherine meet.
Fix remains picking up the papers.)
MINISTER: So, tell us Fogg… what do you think of my precious jewel?
FOGG: Beautiful! (Thinking about Catherine.)
MINISTER: Yes, beautiful, isn’t it?
FOGG: This time your tricks won’t work. Soon, you’ll be in jail.
CATHERINE: Minister, the people of London want to know. Is Mr. Phileas
Fogg right? Have you been corrupted?
MINISTER: Nonsense, Miss Montgomery! Mr. Fogg has no proof at all.
FIX: (While picking up pages.) The Rome Dome!
FOGG: The missing Da Vinci painting! It was stolen from Italy nine weeks
ago.
MINISTER: The Pope gave it to me as a present.
FIX: The Greek News!
FOGG: The Golden Statue! It was stolen from Greece seven weeks ago.
MINISTER: I bought it, at a very good price indeed.
FIX: El Cairo Daily!
FOGG: The African Ruby! It was stolen from Egypt five weeks ago.
MINISTER: I found it on the street!
FIX: Bombay Today!
FOGG: The Eye Of Buddha was stolen from India four weeks ago.
MINISTER: Italy, Greece, Egypt, India… Are you trying to say that I have
been going around the world stealing treasures?
ALL: Yes!
MINISTER: But if I have only been away on holidays for three months...
CATHERINE: That’s thirteen weeks!
FIX: Ninety days!
MINISTER: No way…
CATHERINE: No way…
FIX: No way…
MINISTER: Impossible!
CATHERINE: Impossible!
FIX: Impossible!
FOGG: That is possible! And I can prove it.
MINISTER: Are you trying to say that you can go around the world in ninety
days!
FOGG: No… I can do it in eighty!
CATHERINE: Perfect! The bet is on! If Mr. Fogg can prove that it is possible
to travel around the world in eighty days, the Minister will resign and Fogg’s
accusations shall be investigated.
MINISTER: What?… Resign?…. Investigated?…
FOGG: Yes.Yes.Yes. Perfect. (To himself.) Eighty days… plenty of time. It
should be easy.
MINISTER: Not so fast. But if I win, Phileas Fogg will retract his accusations
and leave London forever.
CATHERINE: Right! It is all written and agreed. Shake hands to seal the bet.

SCENE 2
(Lights go off.)
CATHERINE: Hey, what happened?
MINISTER: Don’t worry Miss Montgomery, the lights will be back on soon.
(Lights come back on.) Can you see?
(Lights go off again.)
CATHERINE: Not anymore...
(The diamond glows in the dark.)
MINISTER: You are perfect! You are beautiful!
CATHERINE: Oh! Minister...
MINISTER: Wonderful! Unique!
FIX: Thank you, Minister.
(Lights come on again.)

2. MINISTER: Definitely the most perfect jewel ever created by nature.
(Catherine and Fix notice the Minister isn’t talking about them.)
CATHERINE & FIX: Oh, it is great!
MINISTER: Come and see it closely. But don’t touch it. (He hits Fix’s hand.)
FIX: Aughh!
(Lights go off once again. A thief in a hood enters to steal the diamond.)
MINISTER: Its shape, sculpted to perfection. Its light, blinding. Its movement...
MINISTER, CATHERINE & FIX: Movement???
(The diamond starts moving around the place. Lights turn on and off and then
stay on. The diamond has been stolen.)
FIX: Thief! Thief!
CATHERINE: Thief! Thief!
MINISTER: What? What?
CATHERINE & FIX: The thief is running away... Look! A Clue!
MINISTER: Inspector Fix! Go after him! I want my diamond back.
SCENE 3
(They all start running after the diamond.)
SCENE 4
AT THE TRAIN STATION
(Phileas Fogg is preparing for his trip. Passepartout runs up to Fogg, who is
getting ready to leave. His preparations are obsessive.)
FOGG: You are late! This cannot happen again. If you are going to be my valet
there are some rules you must follow: 1) One bag for you, one bag for me; 2)
Two tickets always in hand; 3) You must check our destination three times.
PASSEPARTOUT: Four?
FOGG: There’s no four.
PASSEPARTOUT: Forgive me then. And where are we going?
FOGG: Around the world in eighty days. (Opening his book, he unfolds a map.)
France, Italy, Greece, Egypt, Arabia, India.
PASSEPARTOUT: India? (Taking his hood off.)
FOGG: Yes.
PASSEPARTOUT: I have cousins there!
FOGG: Then on to Vietnam, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Japan. We sail the Pacific
Ocean to the United States, take a five day train trip from coast to coast, then
we cross the Atlantic Ocean to get back to London!
PASSEPARTOUT: So you are leaving from London?
FOGG: Yes.
PASSEPARTOUT: And you want to go to … London?
FOGG: Yes!
PASSEPARTOUT: Why don’t you stay in London and save eighty days?
FOGG: The people of London are counting on me! I must prove that this
journey can be completed in eighty days! If I do so, the Minister of Culture and
Justice will have to pay for his crimes. (He sees something wrapped in a cloth.)
But what is this? (Enter Fix and Catherine. Passepartout hides behind Fogg.)
FIX: The diamond was stolen!
FOGG: What? When? (Passepartout gestures behind Fogg.)
CATHERINE: Right after you left. (Passepartout steps back.)
FIX: Have you seen anything suspicious?
FOGG: No...
(Passepartout touches Fogg´s chin and gestures “no” with his finger.)
CATHERINE: Are you sure?
FOGG: Yes, I’m just getting ready for my trip. (Passepartout picks up bags.)
CATHERINE: But are you leaving on this train?
FOGG: Yes, my train departs in two minutes.
CATHERINE: That’s a hundred and twenty seconds!
(Train whistles.)
OFF: All aboard! Train to Dover station departing in two minutes. That’s a
hundred and twenty seconds!
(Fix and Catherine run off.)
FOGG (To Passepartout.): What is this?
PASSEPARTOUT: Rule number one, one bag for you, one bag for me. Rule
number two, two tickets always in hand. Rule number three, three times you
must check our destination: Dover, Dover, Dover! Ready? Let’s go.
FOGG: Wait a minute. This is not the proper outfit for a valet. (Fogg helps
Passepartout take his coat and hood off.) Stop! One more thing. Phileas Fogg.
PASSEPARTOUT: Passepartout.
PASSEPARTOUT & FOGG: (To themselves.) Strange name…
(Fogg and Passepartout leave. Catherine enters in a hurry with her bag. She
stops, takes a picture and leaves. Enter Fix, he finds the thief’s hood. He
assumes Fogg is the thief. He blows his whistle to stop the train.)

FOGG: It’s day three, we are right on schedule, Passepartout. Now we have to
take a carriage to the train station and from there our train to Paris.
PASSEPARTOUT: Paris, the City of Love!

CATHERINE: Just a minute, please!
(Fix is disguised as train guard.)

FIX: Everybody says the same… No ticket, Mmh? Then you can’t travel.
CATHERINE: No, but I have it somewhere.
FIX: The train is leaving!
CATHERINE: Not without me! Here it is!
FIX: Welcome on board!
CATHERINE: Thank you.

IN PARIS
PASSEPARTOUT: Olala, Paris!
(Passepartout reaches for a bag.)
FOGG: One bag for you, one bag for me!
(Passepartout and Fogg leave.)
(Catherine starts taking pictures of the place. Two artists-clowns-thieves-mimes
do a routine. Catherine takes pictures of them. They pretend to paint a portrait
of her while they steal her camera and bag. Fogg enters and sees the robbery.
Fight. Thieves try to take his watch. Thieves run away.)
CATHERINE: Day five. Catherine Montgomery reporting from Paris, France.
Minutes ago my life was threatened by two men...three men...four
criminals...five ferocious criminals... and a dog... a big dog...
FOGG: Excuse me...
CATHERINE: A savage battle for survival took place in the French capital.
My courage and fighting skills saved this humble reporter from certain death.

4. FOGG: Excuse me. I saved you!
CATHERINE: A witness, Phileas Fogg said:…”
FOGG: This is unbelievable.
CATHERINE: “This is unbelievable!!! How strong you are! You are brave,
quick, smart and really beautiful!”
FOGG: You are a liar. I saved your life. What are you doing here?
CATHERINE: I’m reporting.
FOGG: Reporting on what?
CATHERINE: A journey around the world in eighty days.
FOGG: Are you following me?
(Train whistles.)
OFF: All aboard!
CATHERINE: Do you think you’ll make it?
FOGG: I have no time for this.
CATHERINE: A man racing against time… (She writes for her report.)
FOGG: Passepartout, our train is leaving.
CATHERINE: Where are you going next?
FOGG: Stop following me... I won’t tell you.
OFF: All aboard! Last call for the train to Rome.
(Fogg leaves.)
CATHERINE: Rome, the next stop in Phileas Fogg’s journey.... In Phileas
Fogg and Catherine Montgomery’s journey around the world in eighty days....
And a dog… a big dog!
(Catherine is putting things together for the trip. Fix enters and stumbles over
Catherine’s luggage.)
CATHERINE: Hey, watch out!
FIX: I’m sorry.
CATHERINE: Don’t be sorry, be careful!
(She grabs her things and leaves. Passepartout enters and steps on Fix´s back.)
FIX: Ouch!
PASSEPARTOUT: I’m sorry.
FIX: Don’t be sorry, be careful.
SCENE 7
(Fix dresses up as a waiter.)
WAITER: Benvenutti a Roma…
FOGG: (With a schedule.) Bongiorno-Pasta-Aqua-Presto-Prestissimo (Fogg
sees Catherine entering and hides behind the menu.)
(Catherine wants to speak Italian but she can’t.)
WAITER: Benvenutti a Roma, Signorina...
CATHERINE: Benvenutti a Roma...
FOGG: Pasta-Aqua-Presto-Prestissimo!
(Fogg takes her bag and invites her to sit down at his table. He works on his
schedule.)
CATHERINE: Oh, thank you…Where are we going next?
FOGG: We..?
CATHERINE: I’m sorry, Mr Fogg. I know that you don’t like me, I know that
you hate me, I know that you find me irritating, annoying. I am reporting on
your journey. I have been following you. I AM following you. I WILL be
following you…
FOGG: Well, I’ve noticed that.
CATHERINE: By the way, thank you for saving me in Paris.
FOGG: You are welcome Miss Montgomery.
CATHERINE: Ah, you remember my name.
FOGG: You are unforgettable.
(Enter waiter.)
CATHERINE: (Showing the camera.) May I?
(She takes a picture.)
WAITER: Where are you from?
CATHERINE: From London, England.
WAITER: There was a robbery at The Royal Museum of Art a week ago.
FOGG: Yes, on the day we left.
WAITER: AHA! Interesting (He writes down the information.) And where are
you heading to?
FOGG: I am…we are going to Pisa.
WAITER: Oh, Pisa, bellissima…
CATHERINE: I’d better hurry! I still have to buy my ticket. (Catherine exits
without paying.)
WAITER: A thousand liras sir!
FOGG: A thousand liras?
WAITER: For “Pasta-Aqua,-Presto-Prestissimo”!
(Fogg pays and leaves. Fix takes off his disguise.)
SCENE 8
(They arrive at Athens. Looking at the sea.)
FOGG: Oh… look Passepartout, isn’t it beautiful?
PASSEPARTOUT: (Looking at Catherine.) Oh yes, beautiful indeed…
CATHERINE: Mr. Fogg, how’s the journey developing so far?
FOGG: We are on day twenty and according to my schedule we are right on
time. If things carry on this way we should be getting to London on the
eightieth day.
CATHERINE: And besides the schedule, are you enjoying this trip?
FOGG: The weather is fine… the people of the different countries are being
supportive… and the quality of the means of transport is superb.

5. CATHERINE: Are you travelling on your own?
FOGG: No no no, I couldn’t be doing this by myself, I travel with my personal
assistant, Passepartout, that should be right now going to buy our tickets.
CATHERINE: Nice to meet you, Passepartout. My name is Catherine
Montgomery.
PASSEPARTOUT: Nice to meet you (He leaves.)
CATHERINE: (Showing the camera.) May I?
FOGG: Sure…
CATHERINE: I’m sure we’ll get some nice pictures by the sea…
FOGG: How far is it?
CATHERINE: It must be near, Mr. Fogg.
FOGG: But I… well… I don’t know…
CATHERINE: Come on, relax, the ship is leaving in two hours!!
FOGG: Mmmhhhh…
CATHERINE: Is that a yes?
FOGG: Mmhhhhh…
(They leave but Fogg forgets his bag. Fix enters, sees the bag, takes it and runs
away. Fogg enters in a hurry.)
FOGG: I can’t believe it! Oh, no… My bag is missing! I shouldn’t have gone
with you! You are just a distraction! Can’t you see?
CATHERINE: Well… calm down, I thought we could have a good time
together.
FOGG: We are not here to have good times. I must complete this journey on
time. Please, limit yourself to your reports!
CATHERINE: Mr. Fogg… relax!
FOGG: I AM relaxed! And I have a ship to board!
SCENE 9
IN EGYPT
(Fix enters with bag, opens it and checks it out, looking for the diamond, which
he can’t find. Enters Catherine and sees Fix with Fogg´s bag. Fix exits. Enter
Fogg and Passepartout.)
PASSEPARTOUT: Good afternoon, Miss Montgomery!
CATHERINE: Hello, Passepartout!
PASSEPARTOUT: No questions today?
CATHERINE: How’s the trip going?... Passepartout.
PASSEPARTOUT: Excellent! Except for the incident we had in Athens.
CATHERINE: What happened? An accident?!?!
PASSEPARTOUT: No no no… an incident! A thief stole one of our bags.
CATHERINE: A brown bag?
PASSEPARTOUT: Yes.
CATHERINE: This size?
PASSEPARTOUT: Yes!
CATHERINE: Tell Mr. Fogg I’ve just seen a man carrying it.
FOGG: WHAT? Are you serious?
PASSEPARTOUT: Are you serious?
CATHERINE: Tell Mr. Fogg I am serious. I couldn’t see what he was wearing,
but he was smoking a pipe.
PASSEPARTOUT: Smoking a pipe…
CATHERINE: Well… I’m off to the pyramids!
PASSEPARTOUT: Pyramids?!?! It would be very stupid to be in Egypt and not
visit the pyramids!
CATHERINE: Come with me then!
FOGG: No.. I can´t…
CATHERINE: Tell Mr. Fogg I’m not inviting HIM.
PASSEPARTOUT: She’s not inviting… So you are inviting me!
(Catherine and Passepartout start leaving.)
FOGG: Passepartout!
PASSEPARTOUT: Yes, Mr. Fogg.
FOGG: Remember our camels to Arabia leave at sunset.
CATHERINE & PASSEPARTOUT: But it is midday!
FOGG: Passepartout!
PASSEPARTOUT: Yes, Mr. Fogg.
FOGG: Why don’t you leave the bag here with me?
PASSEPARTOUT: With you? No no no… One bag for me… no bag for you…
SCENE 10
IN ARABIA
(Catherine and Fogg are waiting for Passepartout.)
FOGG: Where’s Passepartout?
CATHERINE: He told me to wait for him here with you. Sit down, please.
FOGG: I won’t sit down on the floor…
(Passepartout enters carrying a magic lamp.)
PASSEPARTOUT: Mr. Fogg, Miss Montgomery, look what I have got. It’s a
magic lamp.
FOGG: Where are the tickets?
PASSEPARTOUT: I exchanged them for the lamp.
FOGG: What? Are you crazy?
PASSEPARTOUT: Oh, you can ask the magic lamp for many tickets. Sit down.
FOGG: I won’t sit on the floor!
CATHERINE & P PASSEPARTOUT: Relax!
(They sit down on the mat to begin the ceremony.)

6. PASSEPARTOUT: Left hand… Right hand…Left hand …Right hand… On the
lamp! Close your eyes and concentrate on a little white spot on the horizon.
(Catherine and Fogg look at each other.) Close your eyes. Imagine a field… a
green field, full of flowers, trees. The wind is blowing… (Fogg opens his eyes
and blows and makes noises.) There are birds, a little horse, cows, and in the
distance, far, far away…
CATHERINE: …a dog, a big dog.
PASSEPARTOUT: It’s beautiful, I can see it. It is brown.
CATHERINE: No, it’s white…
PASSEPARTOUT: ...brown.
CATHERINE: …white.
FOGG: It is black!
CATHERINE & PASSEPARTOUT: Relax, Mr. Fogg!!
PASSEPARTOUT: Close your eyes… Concentrate. Think of the white spot and
make one wish.
(Enters Fix leaving the bag next to the ceremony.)
FOGG: (OFF) I wish my bag appears.
CATHERINE: (OFF) I wish he apologizes.
PASSEPARTOUT: I wish the lamp works…
(They look at him.)
PASSEPARTOUT: Did I say that out loud?
FOGG: My bag!!! Passepartout, excellent! Oh, Miss Montgomery, I’m so
happy. I need to apologize. I was a little bit rude. Passepartout, go and buy three
tickets to India.
PASSEPARTOUT: India…At last!
SCENE 11
AT A NIGHT STOP
(Fogg and Catherine at a night stop.)
CATHERINE: So… Mr.Fogg…
FOGG: You can call me Phileas, Miss Montgomery.
CATHERINE: Well, only if you call me Catherine, Phileas.
FOGG: Alright Catherine.
CATHERINE: Alright Phileas. Which is your favourite city so far?
FOGG: Paris, the city of love.
CATHERINE: Phileas, could you say that this trip is one of your greatest
achievements?
FOGG: Well, I would say it’s one of my greatest dreams. (Looking at her.)
CATHERINE: What are you planning to do once you complete your journey?
FOGG: I’d like to come back here…..with you. (They are about to kiss when
Passepartout enters.)
PASSEPARTOUT: Mr.Fogg… Oh …(When he sees the scene he turns round.)
CATHERINE: Hello, Passepartout. Are you alright?
PASSEPARTOUT: Tell Miss Montgomery I am alright.
FOGG: He says he is alright.
CATHERINE: Are you crying?
PASSEPARTOUT: Tell Miss Montgomery I AM crying.
FOGG: He says he is crying.
CATHERINE: Why?
PASSEPARTOUT: Tell Miss Montgomery I am crying because someone stole
my heart… my lamp.
FOGG: His heart… His lamp…
CATHERINE: Don’t worry, we’ll find a new one.
PASSEPARTOUT: No one like Miss Montgomery.
FOGG: What?
PASSEPARTOUT: Nothing.
FOGG: Passepartout, could you take a picture of us?
PASSEPARTOUT: Together?
FOGG: Yes.
PASSEPARTOUT: (Aiming at the floor.) I don’t know how to use it.
(Passepartout leaves followed by Catherine and Fogg.)

IN INDIA
PASSEPARTOUT: Home, sweet home! India…
(Passepartout reaches for the bags.)
FOGG: One bag for you, one bag for me! I will meet you at the port in an hour.
(Passepartout takes the bag with the diamond and is ready to leave.)
PASSEPARTOUT: Mr Fogg…
FOGG: Yes, Passepartout?
PASSEPARTOUT: Goodbye…
FOGG: Goodbye…
PASSEPARTOUT: Mr Fogg…. Thank you and goodbye.
FOGG: You are welcome, Passepartout.
PASSEPARTOUT: Mr Fogg…
FOGG: What?
(Passepartout runs towards Fogg and hugs him. Passepartout grabs the wrong
bag and leaves.)
(Catherine and Fix run into each other.)
CATHERINE: Inspector Fix... What are you doing here?
FIX: Excuse me madam, I don’t know anyone by that name. Au revoir!
CATHERINE: Inspector Fix...

7. FIX: Yes? Aughh...
CATHERINE: What are you doing here?
FIX: Secret mission. I can’t talk....
(Fix starts gesturing and Catherine tries to guess what he means.)
CATHERINE: The bird flew away. The bird is missing.
(Catherine doesn’t understand.)
CATHERINE: The cat ate the bird. Cat? Bird?
CATHERINE: A dog… a big dog…
CATHERINE: The dog is chasing the cat that ate the bird...
CATHERINE: Ah, the bird that is missing.
FIX: AHA! And what are you doing here?
CATHERINE: I’m following Phileas Fogg around the world in eighty days.
FIX: Meow...
CATHERINE: Is Fogg the cat?
FIX: Woof, woof!
CATHERINE: And who’s the bird?
FIX: One month ago there was a big robbery at The Royal Museum of Art. The
“Eye of Buddha” diamond was stolen. I’m in charge of getting it back.
CATHERINE: Are you trying to say that Phileas Fogg is the thief?
FIX: Fogg was there, at the diamond’s presentation. He was talking to the
Minister and just after he left the diamond disappeared…You were there too…
CATHERINE: Your suggestions are impossible! You have no proof.
FIX: (Showing the hood.) And what about this? Phileas Fogg left this at the
train station. This is not a journey around the world… he is escaping!
CATHERINE: That’s the thief’s hood… no… no… but it can’t be! Phileas
Fogg is an honest man and this trip is one of his greatest dreams!
FIX: Why don’t you ask him? Here he comes.
(Fix hides. Enters Fogg.)
FOGG: Catherine! How do you find India!
CATHERINE: I haven’t been around it yet.
FOGG: You’d better hurry up. We are right on schedule and will only be here a
couple of hours. Have you taken any pictures?
CATHERINE: Not yet.
FOGG: What’s the matter Catherine?
CATHERINE: Mmmmm….
FOGG: Are you homesick?
CATHERINE: No… Phileas…
(Fogg approaches and tries to hug her.)
CATHERINE: Are you the cat?
FOGG: What?
CATHERINE: The cat that ate the bird…
FOGG: Are you mad?
CATHERINE: I have to ask you about something that somebody told me about
someone…
FOGG: Come on, I don’t have time to lose!
CATHERINE: Did you steal the diamond?
FOGG: Diamond?
CATHERINE: Don’t you remember? London… Museum… Minister…
DIAMOND! Did you take it or did you not? They are blaming you for the
robbery!
FOGG: Who’s blaming me?
CATHERINE: Inspector Fix!
FOGG: Inspector Fix?! I don’t care about him, he is miles and miles away. As
soon as I complete my journey I’ll talk to him face-to-face.
(Enter Fix. Blows a whistle.)
FOGG: Inspector Fix!
FIX: Mmmmm… the dog finally caught the cat!
FOGG: I haven’t got the bird… the diamond!
CATHERINE: There must be some mistake!
FIX: You are under arrest!
FOGG: Nonsense! I am innocent!
CATHERINE: You have no proof!
FIX: Well… If you are innocent I’m sure you will have no problem if I... search
your luggage.
FOGG: Go ahead. I have nothing to hide!
FIX: We’ll see…
(Fix searches the luggage. He finds different objects and finally finds the
diamond.)
FOGG: That is not mine.
FIX: It is not yours indeed. This belongs to the Royal Museum of Art.
FOGG: Catherine, this is not what you think.
(Catherine remains silent, disappointed.)
FOGG: Catherine, you must believe me.
CATHERINE: And what about your dream? Was that a lie too?
(Catherine leaves. Fogg starts going after her. Fix blows a whistle. Fogg runs
away in the opposite direction. Fix runs after him.)
SCENE 13
(Fogg is followed by Fix. Passepartout enters with bag. He places it on the
floor and opens it. He can’t find the diamond. Enters Catherine.)

8. CATHERINE: Day fourty-six: “Catherine Montgomery reporting from
Bombay, India with shocking news. The man who instigated this magical
adventure, a journey around the world in eighty days, is a fraud. Phileas Fogg
was caught in Bombay carrying the stolen “Eye of Buddha” diamond…”
(Passepartout hears the news and runs offstage looking for Fogg. Fix runs with
the diamond. Fogg follows him, and when he enters he sees Catherine.)
FOGG: Catherine, I need to talk to you before boarding the ship. Please, just a
minute, just a second, just give me a chance…please.
CATHERINE: I don’t talk to thieves. Excuse me… (She exits.)
(Enters Passepartout.)
FOGG: But Catherine…
PASS: Where’s the diamond sir?
FOGG: Inspector Fix took it away from me.
PASSEPARTOUT: And where is he?
FOGG: Well, he went running that way…
(Passepartout exits.)
FOGG: But how do you know about the diamond? Catherine, Catherine! (Fogg
exits after Catherine.)
(Enters Fix with diamond. Enters Catherine.)
FIX: Aughh…So where is Phileas Fogg? He is escaping!
CATHERINE: By ship!
OFF: All aboard!
FIX: You keep the diamond. I’ll get that Phileas Fogg.
(Fix exits. Passepartout and Fogg enter, Catherine hides.)
FOGG: Have you seen Catherine…?
PASSEPARTOUT: No. Have you seen Inspector Fix?
FOGG: No. But, why are you looking for him? How did you know about the
diamond, Passepartout? Tell me the truth, I trust you.
PASSEPARTOUT: Well, it is not that easy… I know that they are blaming you
for the robbery, but I must confess that I placed the diamond in your bag.
FOGG: What? Why? How? When? Where?
PASSEPARTOUT: I took the diamond from the museum…but I didn’t steal it.
FOGG: And how do you explain that?
PASSEPARTOUT: The diamond belongs to India. It was stolen by an
Englishman. I was chosen to bring the diamond back to where it belongs. It has
a deep meaning for our spiritual beliefs. That is why I need to get that Inspector
now…
(Off – ship horn.)
CATHERINE: Well, I guess it’s too late. Fix has just left on that ship to Hong
Kong.
FOGG: What? I missed my ship.
PASSEPARTOUT: It was so near. I will never get another chance to get the
diamond back again. I’m a total failure. I will never forgive myself for this.
CATHERINE: Passepartout, I heard what you were just telling Phileas. You are
a brave man. Here you are.
PASSEPARTOUT: Oh, this is incredible!
CATHERINE: And Phileas… I guess I owe you an apology…
FOGG: It’s alright Catherine. The most important thing now is to get that
diamond back to its proper place.
SCENE 14
(A mysterious Hindu man enters and takes the diamond ceremonially, then he
exits.)
FOGG: Catherine, Passepartout, it is time to say goodbye…
CATHERINE: Goodbye? Why?
FOGG: Don’t you remember the bet? It was very clear. If I can not prove that it
is possible to go around the world in eighty days I should retract my accusations
against the Minister and leave London forever.
CATHERINE: But it is day fifty!
FOGG: I had it all planned, it was the only way.
(The Hindu man enters again and gives Fogg a bag full of different things. He
says something in Hindu.)
PASSEPARTOUT: (Translating.) “You have many dreams to dream, don’t let
them go”

AT THE MUSEUM
(Enter Fix.)
MINISTER: You?
FIX: Yes, it’s me!
MINISTER: Where have you been, Inspector Fix?
FIX: Do you remember the day of the robbery?
MINISTER: Yes, how can I forget it?
FIX: I was running after the thief when I found…. The hood!
MINISTER: What hood?
FIX: AHA! The hood that was used by… The thief!
MINISTER: And who was the thief?
FIX: I boarded the train and followed the thief. We went through France, Italy,
Greece, Egypt, Arabia. I hid in trains, buses, ships, carriages, following… Mr.
Fogg!
MINISTER: Is Mr. Fogg the thief?
FIX: AHA! I searched through his belongings and found… The Diamond!
MINISTER: My diamond! And where is it?
FIX: AHA! I gave it to… Miss Montgomery!
MINISTER: And where is Miss Montgomery now?
FIX: ... I don’t know.
MINISTER: And my diamond?
FIX: … I don’t know.
MINISTER: And Mr. Fogg?
FIX: … I don’t know. But I have… the hood!
MINISTER: So… you went around the globe looking for a diamond and
following a thief, and you came back to where you started without the diamond
and without the thief?
FIX: Yes… but it was a wonderful trip!
MINISTER: Argh!!!
FIX: Here you are.
MINISTER: But what is this?

MINISTER: And…what do you want me to do with it?
FIX: Pay for it?
MINISTER: Ticket to Paris, 30 pounds…
FIX: First class…
MINISTER: Hotel in Rome, 43 pounds…
FIX: A five star…
MINISTER: Tour to the Pyramids, 100 pounds…
FIX: Including a camel ride.
MINISTER: Popcorn….?
FIX: I went to the theatre.
MINISTER: I will not pay you for any of these expenses. I didn’t ask you to
make that trip.
FIX: But you asked me to look for the diamond.
MINISTER: And where is it?
FIX: Mmmm…But I’m broke.
MINISTER: No, you are fired.
FIX: But why?
MINISTER: You took off for eighty days without asking for permission.
(The clock strikes, showing that day eighty has ended.)
MINISTER: Well, at least Fogg couldn’t complete the journey on time. Day
eighty-one... I won the bet.
FIX: Congratulations, Minister!
SCENE 16
(Enter Catherine and Fogg.)
FOGG & CATHERINE: We’ve made it!
CATHERINE: Phileas, a photograph! Phileas Fogg, man of the year, completed
a journey around the world in eighty days! Anything to say?
FOGG: I couldn’t have done this without the help of my friends.
CATHERINE: Would you like to dedicate this to anybody?
FIX: Yes, to the people of London, who inspired this journey. A journey
seeking justice.
(Minister coughs calling for attention.)
MINISTER: Excuse me!
FOGG: Anything to say, Minister?
MINISTER: Yes, you are late!
FOGG & CATHERINE: What?
MINISTER: You are late! (He shows the calendar, Fogg checks his clock.)
CATHERINE: But for less than a minute…
FOGG: He’s right, I couldn’t make it.
MINISTER: You couldn’t. And only for one minute! Ha ha ha, even inspector
Fix got here before you!
FOGG: Before me??
FIX: Yes, about five minutes ago!
(They all look at each other. Minister checks calendar, Fogg his watch,
Catherine her book and Fix smokes his pipe.)
MINISTER: Inspector Fix, take Phileas Fogg out of London forever!
FIX: But you fired me!
MINISTER: You are hired again! GO!
FOGG: Not so fast. Catherine, please.
CATHERINE: (Reading her reports.) “If Phileas Fogg can prove that it is
possible to go around the world in eighty days, the Minister will resign and
undergo investigations”. Phileas Fogg, have you got any proof?
FOGG: (Pointing at Fix.) You are looking at it!
CATHERINE: Inspector Fix, man of the year, completed a journey around the
world in eighty days! Anything to say?
FIX: AHA! When the bird flew away from the museum I knew a cat was
behind it. Quickness, smartness and intelligence were needed for that dangerous
mission. And who better than a dog…
CATHERINE: A big dog… Inspector Fix, from London to the world, in only
eighty days.
OFF: All Aboard! Train to Manchester departing from platform 4, leaving in
one minute.
(Minister runs away.)
CATHERINE & FOGG: Inspector Fix… Inspector Fix… man of the year!
FIX: Yes?
FOGG: GO after him! Quickly!
(Fix runs behind Minister.)
CATHERINE: It looks like the trip is not over yet!
(She starts leaving.)
FOGG: Our journey is just beginning… (They kiss.)
