Phonetics is a branch of linguistics that studies how humans produce and perceive sounds, or in the case of sign
languages, the equivalent aspects of sign.[1] Phoneticians—linguists who specialize in phonetics—study the physical
properties of speech. The field of phonetics is traditionally divided into three sub-disciplines based on the research
questions involved such as how humans plan and execute movements to produce speech (articulatory phonetics), how
various movements affect the properties of the resulting sound (acoustic phonetics), or how humans convert sound
waves to linguistic information (auditory phonetics). Traditionally, the minimal linguistic unit of phonetics is the
phone—a speech sound in a language—which differs from the phonological unit of phoneme; the phoneme is an
abstract categorization of phones.
Phonetics broadly deals with two aspects of human speech: production—the ways humans make sounds—and
perception—the way speech is understood. The communicative modality of a language describes the method by which
a language produces and perceives languages. Languages with oral-aural modalities such as English produce speech
orally (using the mouth) and perceive speech aurally (using the ears). Sign languages, such as Australian Sign Language
(Auslan) and American Sign Language (ASL), have a manual-visual modality, producing speech manually (using the
hands) and perceiving speech visually (using the eyes). ASL and some other sign languages have in addition a manual-
manual dialect for use in tactile signing by deafblind speakers where signs are produced with the hands and perceived
with the hands as well.
PHONETICS
Language production consists of several interdependent processes which transform a non-linguistic
message into a spoken or signed linguistic signal. After identifying a message to be linguistically encoded, a
speaker must select the individual words—known as lexical items—to represent that message in a process
called lexical selection. During phonological encoding, the mental representation of the words are
assigned their phonological content as a sequence of phonemes to be produced. The phonemes are
specified for articulatory features which denote particular goals such as closed lips or the tongue in a
particular location. These phonemes are then coordinated into a sequence of muscle commands that can
be sent to the muscles, and when these commands are executed properly the intended sounds are
produced.
These movements disrupt and modify an airstream which results in a sound wave. The modification is
done by the articulators, with different places and manners of articulation producing different acoustic
results. For example, the words tack and sack both begin with alveolar sounds in English, but differ in how
far the tongue is from the alveolar ridge. This difference has large effects on the air stream and thus the
sound that is produced. Similarly, the direction and source of the airstream can affect the sound. The most
common airstream mechanism is pulmonic—using the lungs—but the glottis and tongue can also be used
to produce airstreams.
Language perception is the process by which a linguistic signal is decoded and understood
by a listener. In order to perceive speech the continuous acoustic signal must be converted
into discrete linguistic units such as phonemes, morphemes, and words. In order to
correctly identify and categorize sounds, listeners prioritize certain aspects of the signal
that can reliably distinguish between linguistic categories. While certain cues are
prioritized over others, many aspects of the signal can contribute to perception. For
example, though oral languages prioritize acoustic information, the McGurk effect shows
that visual information is used to distinguish ambiguous information when the acoustic
cues are unreliable.
The first known phonetic studies were carried out as early as the 6th century BCE by Sanskrit
grammarians.[2] The Hindu scholar Pāṇini is among the most well known of these early investigators,
whose four-part grammar, written around 350 BCE, is influential in modern linguistics and still
represents "the most complete generative grammar of any language yet written".[3] His grammar
formed the basis of modern linguistics and described several important phonetic principles, including
voicing. This early account described resonance as being produced either by tone, when vocal folds are
closed, or noise, when vocal folds are open. The phonetic principles in the grammar are considered
"primitives" in that they are the basis for his theoretical analysis rather than the objects of theoretical
analysis themselves, and the principles can be inferred from his system of phonology.
The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) is an alphabetic system of phonetic notation based primarily on the Latin script. It
was devised by the International Phonetic Association in the late 19th century as a standardized representation of speech
sounds in written form.[1] The IPA is used by lexicographers, foreign language students and teachers, linguists, speech–
language pathologists, singers, actors, constructed language creators and translators.[2][3]
The IPA is designed to represent those qualities of speech that are part of lexical (and to a limited extent prosodic) sounds
in oral language: phones, phonemes, intonation and the separation of words and syllables.[1] To represent additional
qualities of speech, such as tooth gnashing, lisping, and sounds made with a cleft lip and cleft palate, an extended set of
symbols, the extensions to the International Phonetic Alphabet, may be used.[2]
IPA symbols are composed of one or more elements of two basic types, letters and diacritics. For example, the sound of the
English letter ⟨t⟩ may be transcribed in IPA with a single letter, [t], or with a letter plus diacritics, [t̺ʰ], depending on how
precise one wishes to be.[note 1] Slashes are used to signal phonemic transcription; thus /t/ is more abstract than either
[t̺ʰ] or [t] and might refer to either, depending on the context and language.
Occasionally letters or diacritics are added, removed or modified by the International Phonetic Association. As of the most
recent change in 2005,[4] there are 107 segmental letters, an indefinitely large number of suprasegmental letters, 44
diacritics (not counting composites) and four extra-lexical prosodic marks in the IPA. Most of these are shown in the current
IPA chart, posted below in this article and at the website of the IPA
IPA
In 1886, a group of French and British language teachers, led by the French linguist Paul Passy, formed what
would be known from 1897 onwards as the International Phonetic Association (in French, l'Association
phonétique internationale).[6] Their original alphabet was based on a spelling reform for English known as
the Romic alphabet, but to make it usable for other languages the values of the symbols were allowed to
vary from language to language.[7] For example, the sound [ʃ] (the sh in shoe) was originally represented
with the letter ⟨c⟩ in English, but with the digraph ⟨ch⟩ in French.[6] In 1888, the alphabet was revised so as
to be uniform across languages, thus providing the base for all future revisions.[6][8] The idea of making the
IPA was first suggested by Otto Jespersen in a letter to Paul Passy. It was developed by Alexander John Ellis,
Henry Sweet, Daniel Jones, and Passy.[9]
Since its creation, the IPA has undergone a number of revisions. After revisions and expansions from the
1890s to the 1940s, the IPA remained primarily unchanged until the Kiel Convention in 1989. A minor
revision took place in 1993 with the addition of four letters for mid central vowels[2] and the removal of
letters for voiceless implosives.[10] The alphabet was last revised in May 2005 with the addition of a letter
for a labiodental flap.[11] Apart from the addition and removal of symbols, changes to the IPA have
consisted largely of renaming symbols and categories and in modifying typefaces.[2]
Extensions to the International Phonetic Alphabet for speech pathology (extIPA) were created in 1990 and
were officially adopted by the International Clinical Phonetics and Linguistics Association in 1994
The general principle of the IPA is to provide one letter for each distinctive sound (speech segment).[13] This means that:
It does not normally use combinations of letters to represent single sounds, the way English does with ⟨sh⟩, ⟨th⟩ and ⟨ng⟩, or
single letters to represent multiple sounds, the way ⟨x⟩ represents /ks/ or /ɡz/ in English.
There are no letters that have context-dependent sound values, the way ⟨c⟩ and ⟨g⟩ in several European languages have a
"hard" or "soft" pronunciation.
The IPA does not usually have separate letters for two sounds if no known language makes a distinction between them, a
property known as "selectiveness".[2][note 2] However, if a large number of phonemically distinct letters can be derived
with a diacritic, that may be used instead.[note 3]
The alphabet is designed for transcribing sounds (phones), not phonemes, though it is used for phonemic transcription as
well. A few letters that did not indicate specific sounds have been retired (⟨ˇ⟩, once used for the "compound" tone of
Swedish and Norwegian, and ⟨ƞ⟩, once used for the moraic nasal of Japanese), though one remains: ⟨ɧ⟩, used for the sj-
sound of Swedish. When the IPA is used for phonemic transcription, the letter–sound correspondence can be rather loose.
For example, ⟨c⟩ and ⟨ɟ⟩ are used in the IPA Handbook for /t͡ʃ/ and /d͡ʒ/.
Among the symbols of the IPA, 107 letters represent consonants and vowels, 31 diacritics are used to modify these, and 17
additional signs indicate suprasegmental qualities such as length, tone, stress, and intonation.[note 4] These are organized
into a chart; the chart displayed here is the official chart as posted at the website of the IPA.

  • 2. Phonetics is a branch of linguistics that studies how humans produce and perceive sounds, or in the case of sign languages, the equivalent aspects of sign.[1] Phoneticians—linguists who specialize in phonetics—study the physical properties of speech. The field of phonetics is traditionally divided into three sub-disciplines based on the research questions involved such as how humans plan and execute movements to produce speech (articulatory phonetics), how various movements affect the properties of the resulting sound (acoustic phonetics), or how humans convert sound waves to linguistic information (auditory phonetics). Traditionally, the minimal linguistic unit of phonetics is the phone—a speech sound in a language—which differs from the phonological unit of phoneme; the phoneme is an abstract categorization of phones. Phonetics broadly deals with two aspects of human speech: production—the ways humans make sounds—and perception—the way speech is understood. The communicative modality of a language describes the method by which a language produces and perceives languages. Languages with oral-aural modalities such as English produce speech orally (using the mouth) and perceive speech aurally (using the ears). Sign languages, such as Australian Sign Language (Auslan) and American Sign Language (ASL), have a manual-visual modality, producing speech manually (using the hands) and perceiving speech visually (using the eyes). ASL and some other sign languages have in addition a manual- manual dialect for use in tactile signing by deafblind speakers where signs are produced with the hands and perceived with the hands as well.   • 3. Language production consists of several interdependent processes which transform a non-linguistic message into a spoken or signed linguistic signal. After identifying a message to be linguistically encoded, a speaker must select the individual words—known as lexical items—to represent that message in a process called lexical selection. During phonological encoding, the mental representation of the words are assigned their phonological content as a sequence of phonemes to be produced. The phonemes are specified for articulatory features which denote particular goals such as closed lips or the tongue in a particular location. These phonemes are then coordinated into a sequence of muscle commands that can be sent to the muscles, and when these commands are executed properly the intended sounds are produced. These movements disrupt and modify an airstream which results in a sound wave. The modification is done by the articulators, with different places and manners of articulation producing different acoustic results. For example, the words tack and sack both begin with alveolar sounds in English, but differ in how far the tongue is from the alveolar ridge. This difference has large effects on the air stream and thus the sound that is produced. Similarly, the direction and source of the airstream can affect the sound. The most common airstream mechanism is pulmonic—using the lungs—but the glottis and tongue can also be used to produce airstreams.
  • 4. Language perception is the process by which a linguistic signal is decoded and understood by a listener. In order to perceive speech the continuous acoustic signal must be converted into discrete linguistic units such as phonemes, morphemes, and words. In order to correctly identify and categorize sounds, listeners prioritize certain aspects of the signal that can reliably distinguish between linguistic categories. While certain cues are prioritized over others, many aspects of the signal can contribute to perception. For example, though oral languages prioritize acoustic information, the McGurk effect shows that visual information is used to distinguish ambiguous information when the acoustic cues are unreliable.

The first known phonetic studies were carried out as early as the 6th century BCE by Sanskrit grammarians.[2] The Hindu scholar Pāṇini is among the most well known of these early investigators, whose four-part grammar, written around 350 BCE, is influential in modern linguistics and still represents "the most complete generative grammar of any language yet written".[3] His grammar formed the basis of modern linguistics and described several important phonetic principles, including voicing. This early account described resonance as being produced either by tone, when vocal folds are closed, or noise, when vocal folds are open. The phonetic principles in the grammar are considered "primitives" in that they are the basis for his theoretical analysis rather than the objects of theoretical analysis themselves, and the principles can be inferred from his system of phonology.
  • 6. The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) is an alphabetic system of phonetic notation based primarily on the Latin script. It was devised by the International Phonetic Association in the late 19th century as a standardized representation of speech sounds in written form.[1] The IPA is used by lexicographers, foreign language students and teachers, linguists, speech– language pathologists, singers, actors, constructed language creators and translators.[2][3] The IPA is designed to represent those qualities of speech that are part of lexical (and to a limited extent prosodic) sounds in oral language: phones, phonemes, intonation and the separation of words and syllables.[1] To represent additional qualities of speech, such as tooth gnashing, lisping, and sounds made with a cleft lip and cleft palate, an extended set of symbols, the extensions to the International Phonetic Alphabet, may be used.[2] IPA symbols are composed of one or more elements of two basic types, letters and diacritics. For example, the sound of the English letter ⟨t⟩ may be transcribed in IPA with a single letter, [t], or with a letter plus diacritics, [t̺ʰ], depending on how precise one wishes to be.[note 1] Slashes are used to signal phonemic transcription; thus /t/ is more abstract than either [t̺ʰ] or [t] and might refer to either, depending on the context and language. Occasionally letters or diacritics are added, removed or modified by the International Phonetic Association. As of the most recent change in 2005,[4] there are 107 segmental letters, an indefinitely large number of suprasegmental letters, 44 diacritics (not counting composites) and four extra-lexical prosodic marks in the IPA. In 1886, a group of French and British language teachers, led by the French linguist Paul Passy, formed what would be known from 1897 onwards as the International Phonetic Association (in French, l'Association phonétique internationale).[6] Their original alphabet was based on a spelling reform for English known as the Romic alphabet, but to make it usable for other languages the values of the symbols were allowed to vary from language to language.[7] For example, the sound [ʃ] (the sh in shoe) was originally represented with the letter ⟨c⟩ in English, but with the digraph ⟨ch⟩ in French.[6] In 1888, the alphabet was revised so as to be uniform across languages, thus providing the base for all future revisions.[6][8] The idea of making the IPA was first suggested by Otto Jespersen in a letter to Paul Passy. It was developed by Alexander John Ellis, Henry Sweet, Daniel Jones, and Passy.[9] Since its creation, the IPA has undergone a number of revisions. After revisions and expansions from the 1890s to the 1940s, the IPA remained primarily unchanged until the Kiel Convention in 1989. A minor revision took place in 1993 with the addition of four letters for mid central vowels[2] and the removal of letters for voiceless implosives.[10] The alphabet was last revised in May 2005 with the addition of a letter for a labiodental flap.[11] Apart from the addition and removal of symbols, changes to the IPA have consisted largely of renaming symbols and categories and in modifying typefaces.[2] Extensions to the International Phonetic Alphabet for speech pathology (extIPA) were created in 1990 and were officially adopted by the International Clinical Phonetics and Linguistics Association in 1994

The general principle of the IPA is to provide one letter for each distinctive sound (speech segment).[13] This means that: It does not normally use combinations of letters to represent single sounds, the way English does with ⟨sh⟩, ⟨th⟩ and ⟨ng⟩, or single letters to represent multiple sounds, the way ⟨x⟩ represents /ks/ or /ɡz/ in English. There are no letters that have context-dependent sound values, the way ⟨c⟩ and ⟨g⟩ in several European languages have a "hard" or "soft" pronunciation. The IPA does not usually have separate letters for two sounds if no known language makes a distinction between them, a property known as "selectiveness".[2][note 2] However, if a large number of phonemically distinct letters can be derived with a diacritic, that may be used instead.[note 3] The alphabet is designed for transcribing sounds (phones), not phonemes, though it is used for phonemic transcription as well. A few letters that did not indicate specific sounds have been retired (⟨ˇ⟩, once used for the "compound" tone of Swedish and Norwegian, and ⟨ƞ⟩, once used for the moraic nasal of Japanese), though one remains: ⟨ɧ⟩, used for the sj- sound of Swedish. When the IPA is used for phonemic transcription, the letter–sound correspondence can be rather loose. For example, ⟨c⟩ and ⟨ɟ⟩ are used in the IPA Handbook for /t͡ʃ/ and /d͡ʒ/. Among the symbols of the IPA, 107 letters represent consonants and vowels, 31 diacritics are used to modify these, and 17 additional signs indicate suprasegmental qualities such as length, tone, stress, and intonation.[note 4] These are organized into a chart; the chart displayed here is the official chart as posted at the website of the IPA.
