6. Hip bone
03
➢ Irregular bone.
➢ Formed of :
Ilium: superiorly
Ischium: postero-inferiorly
Pubis: antero-inferiorly
➢ Connected at the acetabulum by
triradiate Y-shaped cartilage.
7. Acetabulum
➢ Cup shaped depression.
➢ Formed by :
Ilium: 2/5
Ischium: 2/5
Pubis: 1/5
➢ Articulate with head of femur Hip joint
10. Hip bone ossification
03
➢ Endochondral ossification.
➢ 3 Primary centers (prenatal).
➢ Secondary centers (postnatal).
➢ Fusion of the triradiate cartilage
occurs at mid puberty.
11. The Ilium
➢ Formed of:
Ala & body.
➢ 4 borders: ant., post., sup. (iliac
crest) & med.
➢ 3 surfaces: gluteal (lateral), iliac
(medial) & sacropelvic (medial).
12. The Ilium: Borders
➢ Ant. Border: ASIS, AIIS &
descend to acetabulum.
➢ Post. Border: PSIS, PIIS &
part of the greater sciatic notch.
13. The Ilium: Borders
Med. Border
• Separates iliac fossa from
sacro-pelvic surface.
• Rough in its upper part, sharp
where it bounds the articular
surface for the sacrum, finally
rounded (arcuate line).
• Ends at ilio-pubic eminence.
14. Superior border
(Iliac crest)
➢ From ASIS (palpable) to PSIS
(not palpable).
➢ Convex upward, internally:
concave (in front) & convex
(behind).
➢ 2 segments: ventral & dorsal.
25. The ischial body
➢ 2 ends:
Upper & Lower
➢ 3 borders:
1. Ant.
2. Post. (part of greater
sciatic notch, ischial spine
& lesser sciatic notch).
3. Lat.
Ischial body

26. The ischial body

2. Post.
3. pelvic

28. The ischial tuberosity
➢ Divided by a transverse ridge into
1. Upper quadrangular area:
divided by oblique ridge into:
• Upper lat. Part
• Lower med. part
2. Lower triangular area:
divided by longitudinal ridge into:
• lat. Part
• med. part
30. Obturator foramen
➢ Boundaries:
• Above: grooved obturator surface of
the superior pubic ramus.
• Medially: pubic body & inferior pubic
ramus.
• Below: ischial ramus.
• Laterally: anterior border of the ischial
body.
31. Obturator foramen
➢ large & oval in males, smaller &
nearly triangular in females.
➢ Almost closed by the obturator
membrane except supero-
laterally (obturator canal).
