The Future of Evangelism
Going where the people are has been part of The Salvation Army since its’
inception. Music and theatrics drew the crowds to the cathedral of the open
air and the message of Jesus was proclaimed in the streets. Today, the
Internet has become the digital street corner, the place where people go to
connect. If General William Booth were alive today, how would he engage
the multitudes at the intersection of technology and ministry?
Recently, SAVN.tv had a chance to interview General Andre’ Cox as he
addressed this very question.
"I do believe that the Founder would actually have used this greatly.
When we think of his use of technology,
the early motorcades, when the automobile was a new invention.
I can only imagine that he would use it to the maximum."
- General Andre' Cox
Thanks to the Vision and Leadership of Commissioner James Knaggs, USA
Western Territorial Commander, SAVN.tv is positioned right in the middle of
the intersection of technology and ministry. Taking the message to the
masses on the digital street corner. This ministry platform, not only tells the
Army’s story and champions its’ causes, it and evangelistic tools.
Guy Noland, Executive Director of the Salvation Army Vision Network
(SAVN.tv) stated,
"It's imperative we continue to follow the Founder's vision
of meeting people at their point of need, on the street corner
where they live and congregate. For the upcoming millennial generation,
that street corner is cyberspace. If we don't develop a solid Internet
presence right now, our great movement will be in serious trouble come 20
years.
On March 31st
, 2014 SAVN.tv will launch SAVN Group Chat rooms that can
be hold anywhere from 20-100 people at a time. A moderator (host) will guide
the discussions and offer any technical support if needed. There is a video
window as well where youtube playlist may be customized for each group to
view individually or together. This is a great tool for conversation starters,
worship songs or teaching. Other features include a chat wall to text, a “chat
2. now” button where Spiritual Coaches are available 24/7 in over 30 languages
to offer point people to Jesus and prayer. There are even social media share
buttons to invite people to join your group. Officers and Salvationist around
the world will be to join or lead their own Bible Study or Recovery Group. In
fact, several Salvationist from around the world have already signed on to
lead groups.
Major Russell Wyles will be the first Divisional Commander (West Scotland)
in the world to use this new and exciting ministry tool. He has stated,
“Living in a country with a hugely dispersed population,
the SAVN Group Chat feature provides a connectivity
and rapid communication we can embrace
for the deepest spiritual purposes.
We already inform and disciple using Twitter and Facebook,
but this takes us to a whole new world of possibilities.”
Colonel Dawn Heatwole, USA Central Territorial Secretary for Women’s
Ministries, will be pioneering this new initiative. She says,
"We are hoping that SAVN Group Chat will give women across our territory
an opportunity to find a sense of community in a Christian environment
where they can find support, Biblical principles, and grace. We do not
intend for this to take the place of traditional small groups, but to make
ourselves more accessible to those who may not be near Salvation Army
Corps. We want allow individuals who feel isolated in a small community to
have opportunities to interact with Christian women."
Jonathan Evans, former principal of The War College in Canada sees using
the SAVN Group Chat room as a way of further connecting with alumni,
encouraging them in their discipleship covenants and leading cell groups.
“This is the kind of innovation that Booth and Wesley
woulduse for discipleship, he notes.’
Revolution Hawaii will also be utilizing this new technology in a similar
manner as the War College. The class of 2014 is very excited about using the
SAVN Group Chat to stay connected to each other and the Lord. They see
endless possibilities of community, accountability and outreach for
themselves, alumni and future classes.
Pete Brookshaw of Awesome Church in Melbourne, Australia believes, “If we
want to change the world, then we must be using the most innovative,
contextually relevant ministry methods available. The SAVN Group Chat
feature combines creative technology with a passion for the gospel. The
potential is huge!”
3. Two exciting Adult Rehabilitation After-Care ministries in the USA Western
Territory, the Anaheim Praise Works and Metamorphosis will be piloting the
World’s first SAVN Group Chat for Recovery. Guy Noland writes,
“Personally, I'm very excited about the SAVN Group Chat for Recovery,
which will offer online sobriety 24/7 for those in need of help. We've looked
far and wide - there's nothing else like it out there!"
