8. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS IN A LATHE MACHINE
●All materials shall be properly secured in chucks and
collets before machines are started.

clamped before switching on.
●It is dangerous to shift step pulley belts with the hands
while the belts are in motion with power on; use a belt
pole or other suitable stick.

running.
●Operators shall not attempt to use micrometers on
revolving work.
●Keep hands off chuck rims when lathe is in motion.
●Do not attempt to screw chuck on lathe spindle with
power on, as it may get cross-threaded and cause an
accident.

●Lathes are one of the most versatile machine tools in
the industry, used to perform a variety of machining
operations.

12. ●The lathe is applied to the tool and rotated to perform
various operations. It can be used for Turning,Tapping,
forming turning, spiral cutting, finishing, passivation,
boring, spinning, grinding, polishing, etc.

14. PARTS OF A LATHE MACHINE
HEAD STOCK
●The headstock is usually located on the left side of the
lathe and is equipped with gears, spindles, chucks, gear
speed control levers, and feed controllers.

16. ●TAILSTOCK:
● Usually located on the right side of the lathe, the
work piece is supported at the end.

18. ●BED
●THE main parts of the lathe, all parts are bolted to the
bed. It includes the headstock, tailstock, carriage rails
and other parts.

20. ●CARRIAGE
●The carriage is located between the headstock and the
tailstock and contains apron, saddle, compound rest,
cross slide and tool post.

22. ●LEAD SCREW
●Lead screw is used to move the carriage automatically
during threading

24. ●FEED ROD
●It is used to move the carriage from left to right and
vice versa.

26. ●CHIP PAN
●It is present at the bottom of the lathe. Chip pan is
used to collect the chips that are produced during the
lathe operation.

28. ●HANDWHEEL:
●IT is the wheel which is operated by hand to move
cross slide, carriage, tailstock and other parts which has
hand wheel.

30. ●APRON:
●The apron is the front face of the carriage. It is where
the feed controls are located on most manual lathes.
The apron is also a housing for the gears and associated
mechanisms related to power feeding of the carriage
and cross slide.

32. ●TOOL POST:
●A lathe tool post is a machine tool that spins a block of
material when abrasive, cutting, or deformation tools
are applied to the block. Other tool posts are commonly
available.

34. ●LIVE CENTRE:
●Live centers revolve freely, allowing for increased
turning speeds and pressure compared to non-revolving
versions or dead centers. Also known as a lathe live
center, they have internal bearings that are usually
lubricated and sealed to keep out contaminants that can
affect performance.

36. ●DEAD CENTRE:
●A dead centre (one that does not turn freely, i.e., dead)
