According to conventional wisdom, brushless DC (BLDC) motors offer many advantages over conventional brush motors but they’re much more expensive. This is actually untrue. In fact, advances in BLDC design and manufacturing make brushless motors competitive with high-grade brush motors. One of the problems in comparing BLDC motors to brush motors is that most comparisons tend to compare apples to oranges. Commodity brush type motors are much less expensive than BLDC motors but have very short lives. BLDC motors should be compared with high-grade DC brush motors. This infographic examines these facts and more so as to answer the question of whether or not BLDC motors are truly more expensive.
