Today CLT can be seen as describ-
ing a set of core principles about
language learning and teaching, as
summarized above, assumptions
which can be applied in different
ways and which address differ-
ent aspects of the processes of
teaching and learning. Some
focus centrally on the input to
the learning process. Thus
content- based teaching
stresses that the content or
subject matter of teaching
drives the whole language
learning process.

Communicative language teaching
(CLT), or communicative approach ,
is an approach to language teach-
ing that emphasizes interaction as both
the means and the ultimate goal of
study.
A set of princi-
ples about teaching
including recom-
mendations about
method and sylla-
bus where the focus is on meaningful
communication not struc-
ture, use not usage.In this approach,
students are given tasks to accomplish
using language, instead of studying the
language.
CHARACTERISTICS
1. Language is a system for the expression
of meaning.
2. The primary function of language is for
interaction and communication.
3. The structure of the language reflects its
functional and communicative uses.
4. Drilling may occur but peripherally.
5. Students are expected to interact with
other people, either in flesh, pair work or
groups.
6 Dialogues if used, centered around com-
municative functions are not normally
memorized.
