In this slide on what is subnetting we will learn how to efficiently manage excess IP addresses in a network channel and use them by using the subnetting process. You will also learn about the seven essential attributes required for the subnetting process and solve an example to practice subnetting, and also see some benefits and drawbacks of using the subnetting process.
Topics covered in this presentation on what is subnetting are:
1. What Is Subnetting?
2. Class Addresses & Subnet Mask
3. Characteristics Of Subnetting
4. Benefits Of Subnetting
5. Drawbacks Of Subnetting
Subnetting Explained
Subnetting is the process of dividing a large IP address into smaller network address in the network block. This allows the network model to have better conectivity and becomes more efficient in transmission of data and information within the netowork. The subnetting process involves the use of seven attributes which are required for the subnetting process.
What Is Cyber Security?
Cyber Security involves techniques that help in securing various digital components, networks, data, and computer systems, from unauthorized digital access. There are several ways to implement cybersecurity, depending on the kind of network you are connected to and the type of cyberattacks you are prone to. A few ways to implement cybersecurity are defining clear boundaries, using network security control devices like Firewalls and IDS.

5. What Is Subnetting?
Subnetting involves the process of dividing a network into smaller networks to attain better
connectivity, security, and efficient flow of network traffic.
The smaller divided networks are known as sub-networks.

12. Characteristics Of Subnetting
The Seven characteristics of Subnetting:
ï§ Network ID: This is the first IP address in each Sub-Network.
ï§ Broadcast ID: This is the last IP address in each Sub-Network.
ï§ First Host ID: Represents the IP address after the Network ID.
ï§ Last Host ID: Represents the IP address before the Broadcast ID.
ï§ Next Network: This defines the network ID of the next sub-network.
ï§ # IP Addresses: The total no. of IP addresses in the Sub-Network.
ï§ Subnet/CIDR: Is the way to differentiate b/w the Network ID and the Host ID in an IP address.

IstH IP: 192.168.0.1
LstH IP: 192.168.0.126
Next Network: 192.168.0.128
Characteristics?
The Network ID is used to identify the sub-network block.
The Broadcast ID is used to communicate with any of the host attached to the sub-network.
Total no. of usable addresses = Total no. of addresses â 2(Network ID and Broadcast ID)
Usable = 128-2
Usable = 126 IP addresses
15. Benefits Of Subnetting
Enhanced Network Efficiently: When the system transmits a packet on the network, it is transferred to
only those network devices, that are, connected to that specific subnet network after transmitting
through the router.

16. Benefits Of Subnetting
Network Security: In case of a hacking attack, if the network is sub-netted then the damage to
the network can be controlled to a specific sub-network.

18. Drawbacks Of Subnetting
Establishing multiple subnets may make the network system too complex and decrease the
effectiveness of the subnetting.
Wastage of unrequired IP addresses after assigning the needed networks.
Proper requirement of network devices, such as router, switch, etc.
