Tourette Canada will celebrate Tourette Syndrome Awareness Month from May 15th to June 15th by illuminating landmarks across Canada in teal, the color of Tourette syndrome awareness. Landmarks to be lit up include the Toronto sign, Niagara Falls, the Peace Bridge between Fort Erie and Buffalo, and buildings in London, Hamilton, Vancouver, Calgary, and Edmonton. Tourette syndrome is a neurological disorder that affects about 1 in 100 Canadians, especially children, causing physical and verbal tics, yet it remains poorly understood and stigmatized. Tourette Canada aims to raise awareness and support through programs, campaigns, and virtual support groups.

With more than one in 50 children being diagnosed with TS and/or one of its associated
disorders, like OCD and ADHD - not to mention other conditions like anxiety and rage disorders
— it’s time we as a nation recognize that neurological disorders are mainstream and
growing rapidly in the frequency of their diagnosis.
Tourette syndrome awareness month runs from May 15 – June 15, and is a global initiative to
recognize and to raise awareness for Tourette syndrome, a poorly understood, heavily
stigmatized neurological disorder that affects as many as one in 100 Canadian children and
adults. Tourette currently has no cure.
For over 43 years, Tourette Canada has battled against widespread myths, misconceptions,
and ignorance surrounding TS through support programs and public awareness campaigns.
Tourette Canada saw a need for support in more rural and underserviced regions and has
increased its virtual support platform to offer virtual support groups for adults living with TS,
parents/caregivers and youth.
To schedule an interview with one of our staff members at Home Office, or one of our
volunteers, please contact Simon Spencer, Marketing & Communications Coordinator. For
further information on the disorder, the event, or Tourette Canada, visit www.tourette.ca. We
have affiliates in communities from coast to coast who would be happy to share their stories.
Event images are available for media use by request. Send an email to Simon at
