Behavioural Advisory Sessions
Behavioural Advisory Sessions Criteria
The behavioural advisory sessions (BAS) were devised and developed
in November 2010 by theWrexham community learning disability
nurses to support staff teams and their home leaders working with
people with learning disabilities and low level challenging behaviour.
The criteria for accessing the BAS process are:
• Low impact challenging behaviour i.e. not posing significant
risk to self or others or putting their placement at risk of
breaking down
• Residing in a supported living or residential placement
• Motivated home leader and staff team
• Individual is previously known to the team
• Previous health care professional work regarding challenging
behaviour is preferable, but not essential.
For the BAS process to be effective it is
essential that staff attending bring the relevant
information and assessments.
Behavioural Assessments
Behavioural Support Plans
Present risk assessments in place where appropriate
All behavioural protocol strategies in place to manage
identified challenging behaviour
All information regarding previous interventions from
Specialist Learning Disability services
All recordings completed regarding the individuals
challenging behaviour e.g.ABC charts etc
Up to date list of present prescribed medication and
where possible who prescribed and for what reason
Activity schedules and protocols
Person Centre Plan
Current and historical proactive and reactive strategies
Referrals to BAS can
not be made directly
to ensure that the
referral is appropriate
and the correct
model of support /
intervention is
provided.Therefore
these referrals go
through the normal
pathway, being
discussed at the
CLDT allocation
meeting and then the
nurses meeting.The
nurses will decide the
most appropriate
model of support i.e.
behavioural advisory
sessions or allocation
of a community nurse
will be agreed.
Therefore referrals
for community nurse
needs to be as detailed
as possible to ensure
the most suitable
support is provided.
For cases found to be
appropriate for the
BAS process the
senior support
worker / home
leader will be invited
via a letter to attend
the sessions, with an
information leaflet.
It is essential that
the service user
being referred
does not attend
the appointments
to minimise the
anxiety, agitation
and up-set
discussing one’s
own challenging
behaviour can
cause.
These sessions will
last no longer than 1
hour, with 30 minutes
for information
gathering and 30
minuets for
consultation.These
sessions will be held
at Greenacres once a
month.There will be
an initial commitment
of 3 appointments
with further
appointments
available if
appropriate, over a
maximum of 6
sessions.
The BAS process aims
to encourage and
promote staff teams
and management to
develop their own
protocols leading to a
sense of ownership
and therefore
increasing the
likelihood of
implementation and
consistent approach.

current strategies and support there development
where necessary.
• It is essential that you bring any current / historical
information.
• The person being referred i.e. the service user
should not attend the appointment.
• Appointments will last a maximum of 60 minutes.
• There will be an initial commitment of 3
appointments with further available if appropriate,
