What is the orientation
Training ?
An orientation training is a
training where a new member
is introduced to a particular
setting.”
Purposes of Orientation
Training
For effective administration :-
◦ Nursing division can work smoothly
◦ Personnel will be acquainted with
philosophy, policies, routine of the work
and methods of patient care
Purposes of Orientation
Training
For efficient working:-
 Enable to work efficiently and provide
comprehensive care to the patients.
 Enable reduce the learning by trial and
error.
 Orientation will reduce anxiety and
frustration in the new recruited nurses.
 It will help the nursing personnel to
adapt the changes faster and help
them to be at ease and comfortable in
new situations.
Purposes of Orientation
Training
Wish to learn:-
 Orientation programme will satisfy the
need of person to learn quickly and
adjust to the new setting.
 Efficient method of working will provide
her satisfaction.
 Orientation will help her to be competent
and comfortable in different roles such
as Staff Nurse in shift duty, team leader,
ward administrator etc.

  • 9. Orientation to Hospital  To give individual a sense of belongingness.  Conducted along with the Medical Superintendent and Nursing Superintendent.  Explain the type of hospital, governing body, means of support, types of services provided by the hospital.
  • 10. Orientation to Hospital  Organization of the hospital and channel of communication.  Inform about the health services for the staff and procedures to be followed.  Provide information about duty hours, general plan for staff development.

Orientation to the Department of Nursing  Composition of the nursing staff.  Relationship of the hospital to the Nursing college and Medical college.  Placement of nursing services in the organization of the hospital.  Aims of the hospital in relation to patient care.  Doctor's visiting hour.  Professional department other than the nursing and medical department such as dietary department, rehabilitation department, pathology department, blood bank etc.  Staff development programme in nursing.

Orientation to the Unit or ward  Introduction to all the people in the unit.  Types of services being provide in the unit.  Responsibility of nurse.  Explanation of methods of patients assignment; functional method, team method or individual case method.  Location of the time plan in the units

Orientation to the Unit or ward  Outline of patient's routine followed.  Special duties of special persons i.e. duties of counselors, nursing sister, senior-staff nurse.  Methods of charting and reporting.  Channel of communication. Person to whom to go for questions.  Location of equipment.  Sources of information such as procedure book, routine activity book.  Give a copy of job description.
  • 14. Orientation to the Nursing Members who is having Special Experience  Special responsibility includes duty in diabetic clinic, OPD, CCU, ICU etc.  To enable them to work effectively in this changed duty a detailed orientation to the unit need to be given.
  • 15. Orientation to the Nursing Member with Changed Roles  Changing in position like promotion in sister incharge, in matron is very stressful for a person to take a role of the senior position.
