CoderZ League is a virtual robotics and coding competition where students across the globe work collaboratively in teams to complete challenges and missions and accumulate points for a chance to become world champion in their division. It's designed to engage students, regardless of coding experience, while also bringing the fun and excitement of competition to the classroom. This type of learning environment mirrors the collaborative nature of many real-world coding projects while also teaching STEM fundamentals. Through CoderZ League ALL students get to program!
Some of you may use CoderZ curriculum throughout the year. For those of you new to CoderZ we offer both coding curriculum and virtual competitions for grades 3-12. Even if you don't use curriculum throughout the year, you can still participate in the league.
For those of you who do use our curriculum in the classroom, CoderZ League is a great way to celebrate the hard work of your students and allow them to put what they've learned to the ultimate test in a fun and competitive environment – similar to what they might do in an eSports competition. For those of you who don't use our curriculum throughout the year, you'll have the opportunity to add curriculum when you sign up for League so you can get your students ready for the big competition!
Either way, everyone will have access to a training camp so students are starting with instant success as they build confidence in their skills.
ANNA – UPDATE NOTES
Here is a short video of the league 2022
Anna
Competition has long been recognized as a powerful motivator that, when well-facilitated, can bring out the best in individuals. It can push us to test our limits, foster creativity, and develop problem-solving skills. It can open doors to demonstrate how we work with others and collaborate – especially under pressure, how we offer help and support to our team, the importance of knowing when to lead and when to follow, and how we can create environments that cultivate feelings of inclusiveness and belonging.
Coding competition can inject an element of fun and enthusiasm into the learning process.
Because most of our team is from the education world, we know it can be very challenging to reach every student and we understand the struggle of keeping students engaged and wanting to learn.
CoderZ was created as an interactive, accessible environment to encourage engagement in STEM. CoderZ League Integrates gamified missions and activities which introduce other disciplines from basic Math to trigonometry, engineering and high level Physics (depends on students grade).
While CoderZ league is a competition, the winning truly comes from the experience obtained through the competition and the growth that is acquired when students apply 21st century skills like communication, collaboration, growth mindset, critical thinking, and more... We strive to build small victory milestones that keep your students motivated to gain more skills needed for success.
Low Floor – no prior knowledge (teachers and students)
High Ceiling – challenge students
Anna
Let's look at our pedagogical approach
Scaffolding our instruction - our goal is to keep students' curiosity and maintain their motivation to discover new things throughout the process. we are breaking the instructions into small pieces, taking the students through the task while they complete it and creating quick wins to keep them engaged.
CoderZ enables a flexible implementation model while supporting all learners and teachers, regardless of background. However, there are ample opportunities provided for both students and teachers who are ready for the additional challenges.
Help prepare students for their future by creating situations that relate to real-world technologies and scenarios.
There is an emphasis on group work which encourages the collaboration and problem solving skills of students that they will face throughout their education and in future careers.
League also promotes 21st Century Skills – computational/critical thinking, collaboration, communication and creativity

We love hearing from teachers what the competition brought to them and their classroom. Many teachers love the competition because engagement is a critical component to learning, and the eSports environment of league naturally brings that. It can engage students who typically have not had a strong interest in STEM or coding, or have had issues staying engaged in learning.
It’s also really fun to learn about how different educators facilitate the competition. We recently spoke to Kerstin Dumas, a Literacy Specialist and Teacher at Highland Goffes Falls School District who recently utilized CoderZ League in her classroom. She observed incredible transformations in her students while immersed in the competitions. Most notably, over the course of the competition, students began to shift from a focus on their own personal glory to helping their team or even others in their class understand and learn to master a specific mission. She notes that one of the coolest things about her experience with CoderZ League is watching certain students transform into leaders, and watching students who had previously fallen behind in school climb back up. According to Kirsten, “…they were incredibly engaged. And the problem-solving piece, that piece was crucial to their development.” In fact, Kirsten reports that 75% of those who participated in CoderZ League were recognized for their academic growth in achieving a level of distinction on the New Hampshire State Assessment, and additionally academic improvement was observed in every student who participated in CoderZ League.

Anna
We have three Divisions that have suggested grade bands.
Students can compete at a higher recommended age level based on skill set skill set but cannot drop down below their age group to make sure the competition is equitable.
If your 4th or 5th graders have competed in previous competitions, we recommend they move up to the Junior division
This is a competition in a virtual environment, and we want to ensure ALL students are competing together the same level of skills!

Sierra is going to drop the User Guide in the chat right here. It is a very comprehensive guide to everything you could need to know for League! While CoderZ League is very intuitive and easy to implement, we also wanted to provide a resource that could answer any question you would have. It will give additional information about how scoring works, what different roles there are for students -- for example, what the team captain is responsible for, as well as extended activities and ideas to build the participation and excitement outside of the games, (like designing a team flag, building a robot/team mascot with household items, and more). You can still also always reach out to our team for help
Now I'm going to turn it over to Johnathon to discuss how CoderZ league works
The learning phase is our training camp, where students will be able to practice toward the league itself, solving missions and tasks to prep for what’s coming. It’s your chance to build you and your student’s confidence and also set up your team, decide on roles within the group, build your team spirit and create your flag.
The competition phase - On October 3rd, everyone across the globe will be able to access the CoderZ league games, start solving challenges and missions, and track their progress on the leaderboard.
JohnathonHere you can see how the training camp screen looks from the teachers perspective.
On the left you will be able to access the challenges and missions your students will face, on the right you will have a list of your students that will show you the contribution of each student to the team, and how well each one is doing. This will be your indicator to see who’s one the high road and who might need some extra help. This is your chance to also connect between stronger and students who need more assistance and enable them to assist each other to construct a stronger team moving forward.
Johnathon? In this screen you will be able to see the relevant games to your division and monitor your team ranking.
Johnathon
Preliminaries - All Teams will be divided into regions based on geographic location.
Group stage - in this round the top 64 teams from every region will be moved into groups of 4 and start playing the final challenge against the AI.
Playoffs - The top 32 teams within each region will go on to face off against each other in the playoffs until a winner is decided.
World finals - The teams who won the regional finals will go on to face each other in an epic Final Showdown that would determine the CoderZ League World Champions for 2022.

We also wanted to point out we've made some changes to the competition structure and timeline based on previous feedback and we've extended the preliminary and group stages. Obtaining greater familiarity with the platform, and for students to get a good sense of the lay of the land and how the games work was crucial to their success and ability to learn.
The extended time to the preliminary and group stages also gives teams even more opportunities to work together and collaborate. They can allocate more time for brainstorming and planning. This extended collaboration period fosters teamwork and coordination, which can lead to improved overall performance (and a lot more fun and bonding time for the students, which can be especially important and special at the start of a new school year).
The group stage also includes a complex challenge and the level of difficulty increases, so extending its duration allows the teams to delve deeper into the complexity of the challenge. They can spend more time analyzing requirements, researching potential solutions, and implementing effective strategies.
We're all about equity in education, and we also recognized that extending the group stage can provide a more balanced playing field for all teams since they will each have more time. We wanted to reduce the risk of teams being eliminated due to time constraints that they might not have control over, and our hope is that performance can be less impacted by external factors.
SierraThe Novice challenge is the perfect introduction to STEM for students with no previous experience in robotics and coding. Teams work together as they navigate Zappy the robot through engaging missions.
As they progress, students experience the fundamentals of robotics including basic principles of coding with Blockly using simple chain commands.
Novice division ends after the preliminaries phase. but the world finals broadcast is relevant to all divisions. We will get to more information about the world finals here in a bit, but I did want to mention that the achievements from all levels will be recognized at the world finals and, there is also an awards ceremony so it is still a really important and fun part of the League for the novice division is getting to experience the World Finals.
We are going to send a link that goes to a page with a little more information about the Novice division, and if you scroll down these same three flags under "The Games" you can click on each flag and watch a preview video of each of the games CoderZ League - CoderZ League Novice (gocoderz.com)
SierraThe Junior challenge is designed for students with intermediate coding knowledge or for those who have previously competed in the novice division and are ready for the next challenge.
Teams compete to unlock new games and challenges in a quest to get their virtual robots to the finals!
As students refine their Blockly coding skills, they hone their computational thinking and creative problem-solving skills.
Similar to what I mentioned for Novice, here is the link, and if you scroll down you will see the games and each flag plays a preview video of the games
SierraThe Pro challenge engages students with strong coding backgrounds. This is CoderZ League's highest level!
Teams take on challenges in galactic worlds as they work together to solve obstacles and challenges with Blockly and Python.
Students not only deepen their knowledge of coding and physics, but must use collaboration, creativity, and problem solving to succeed.
And if you'd like to see some previews of the games check out this link and scroll down to the flags under the games section

The world finals will take place in January once students are back in school from winter breaks. The World Finals are a big celebratory event that is live-streamed on Twitch where winners of various categories are announced and this is when all regional winners move into a new bracket where they will play against each other in a series of knockout matches until a single team remains.
It's worth mentioning that throughout the tournament some other fun ways to win awards include submitting applications for Most valuable team, most creative, best team flag, excellence in programming award, and more. This a fun way to showcase the scale of what the students participated in and how they can be really proud of all of their accomplishments in the competition. Some schools will even make school-wide events or pep rallies to watch their teams compete or see what STEM and robotics coding competition they were apart of.
