Question 3
1. QUESTION 3
What kind of media institution might distribute your media
product and why?
2. What is a film distributor?
• A film distributor is responsible for the marketing of a film. The distribution company is usually different
from the production company. Distribution deals are an important part of the financing of a film.
• A limited distributor often only deals with certain products like DVD’s, or may only act in a particular
country or market. Primary distributors usually receive credit in the film titles and/or other marketing
material.
• A distributor can set the release date of the film and even the method by which a film is to be exhibited.
For example, directing into cinemas or only available for home viewing.
3. Major or
Independent?
Although I would like our films to be released in big multiplex
cinemas this is very hard for horror films to get the recognition
they need, unless they have been produced by a company who
have already had many successes within or outside the genre.
‘Blumhouse Productions’ are one of the only major distributors
of horror films – with credit for movies like ‘Paranormal Activity’
and ‘The Purge’.This is ideally who I would like to distribute our
film to reach major cinemas as it’s previous films have done.
Major distributors have a good reputation meaning people will
associate the production company with the rest of their good
movies and are more inclined to watch it
If this could not be the case – we would have to use our own
horror specific production studios as distributor and it would
have to be independent – meaning it would overall gross less
and reach a smaller percentage of our audience as people are
not familiar with our company.
4. Blumhouse
Productions
If a real life distributor was to promote our film, I would like it to
be ‘Blumhouse Production’ as they are one of the most
commonly known distributor within our genre. They are
responsible for films like ‘Ouija’ and ‘Insidious’ – both of which
are high grossing horror films and successful in multiplex
cinemas. Alternatives include one of the major 6 organisations
but they don’t specialise in the genre and so this is less likely to
happen.
5. Low Budget
Horror
Films
There are many popular horror films (and franchises)
which had a low budget, but were overall very successful.
This leads to a much high profit.
It also proves that Horror films can be made on a tight
budget and still be triumphant.
$15’000 $60’000 $1.2 million $1.5 million
Earned: $193 million Earned: $248 million Earned: $103,880,027 Earned: $90 million
6. Marketing Taking into account myTargetAudience Member Profile I
can decide where the film would best be advertised
(regarding social media) so that it can reach my target
audience. It suggested that Facebook andYouTube would
be the best places.
Other than social media, there are many option when it
comes to marketing a film, but I generally want the film to
be marketed everywhere to ensure it reaches a wide an
audience as possible.TV is another place I want it to be
advertised with a trailer – the same for in cinema’s.Closer
to the films release, more developed trailers can be
shown and more frequently to entice people to watch it.
The trailer will contain some parts of the film that we
know the target audience likes.
7. Online
Streaming/
On Demand
In order for the film to reach as many people as possible, it’s a
good idea to have it available to stream and on demand. By
doing this, our film will have wider audience, for instance
people who can’t get to cinemas would miss out otherwise.
However it would not want the film itself put onYouTube
where people can watch it for free and it would not make a
profit from that, whereas sites that are on demand or online
streaming require monthly payments, which will benefit us in
the long term. Netflix is a particular place that fits the bill.
8. Conclusion
Overall, I shall try and use a major (horror film) distributor like
Blumhouse to market our film as I feel that using a big well
known company will boost the chances of getting our film
recognized. As our films pretty low budget, I researched low-
budget horror films that have been successes to conclude
that it is very possible for horror films to be low-budget but
gain massive profit and also reach large multiplex cinemas
around the world . I also want it to be available on streaming
sites like Netflix andAmazon Prime. We also want our film to
be marketed in several way different ways in order to reach a
wide around of people and particularly our target audience.
