Ali & Sons Marine Engineering Factory (ASMEF) celebrated the Occupational Safety
Health Day (OSH) for Safety at Work in April 2017.
Everyone including subcontractors, clients and visitors were invited to grace the event in
the yard.
In the event, ASMEF HSSE Manager Supreeth Attavar discussed the significance of the the
celebration and the roles of the International Labor Organization (ILO) and Occupational
Safety Health Abu Dhabi (OSHAD) in making the lives of the workers better at all levels. He
discussed the rights of the workers, as well as their responsibilities towards health and
safety at work. He said, “This is a day to remember those who have lost their lives or
suffered injury at work. The learnings from such incidents have aided in the development of
health and safety standards, therefore we must always be indebted to them.”
OSH Day for Safety at Work
The workforce was then addressed by the General Manager Emad Elatreby, who spoke of
the importance of workers responsibilities and how the submission of Hazard Observation
cards helps in making the workplace safer. While he was happy at the increased contribution
of Hazard Observation cards, he encouraged the workers to contribute more, even offering
a personal cash award for the best Hazard Observation submitted.

ASMEF HSE emergency simulation drills
While our focus is geared towards the prevention of incidents and emergency situations,
at ASMEF we also believe in being fully prepared for all emergency situations that may occur
but also having documented plans and trained personnel to manage these emergency plans
at any time. To keep all personnel at site at a high level of preparedness, various drills are
conducted regularly. At these drills, different emergency situations are simulated, based on
the various emergencies that could arise. Lessons learned from these simulation exercises
help in continually improving our emergency response planning. Recent drills conducted include:
Fire and Emergency Evacuation of the Yard
4
Rescue from height and medical evacuation
Rescue from confined space and medical evacuation

HSE Campaigns
As part of the ASMEF continuous improvement in HSE, different campaigns are being launched
every quarter for the entire year along side all the other HSE programs of the company. The
objective of these campaigns is increased awareness in health and safety matters in general
and in the selected theme of the campaign in particular.
Other than announcements, prominent banners and displays to mark each individual campaign,
events based on the quarterly theme included training, focus during the daily toolbox talks and
weekly safety meetings, reviews of the risk assessments and safety controls, hand outs and
presentations, competitions, awards and the like.
Hand & Finger Injury Prevention Campaign - Q1 2017
Based on HSE performance of 2016, as well as in consideration of the common health and
safety risks of our operations, it was decided to kick start the year with a ‘Hand & Finger Injury
prevention campaign’ during the first quarter.
Prominent displays of banners and posters of the Hand & Finger Injury Prevention Campaign
were placed in the offices and the yard at the first day of the year.
Accordingly, A Hands & Finger Injury Prevention Poster Competition was held, which
pleasantly unearthed a number of talented artists amongst the workforce. Awards were also
given for various HSE Observations and suggestions based on the theme of the campaign.
5
6. The success of the campaign was judged by the number of incidents, inclusive of records
of minor complaints and consultations at the first aid clinic during the period. While there
were no hand & finger injuries through the campaign and even for the few months after, it
was noted that complaints at the site first aid clinic had also reduced dramatically, as shown
in the below table:
HSE
Hand & Finger Campaign Jan Feb Mar
No. of Injuries 0 0 0
Minor first aid cases 10 9 3
Eye Injury Prevention Campaign - Q2 2017
Eye Injury Prevention was the theme selected for the second campaign for the year. This was
based on the risks owing to the nature of our operations, particularly hot work, as well as
analysis of trends from the HSE Observation reports. The campaign also started in similar
manner as the preceding campaign, with prominent banners and displays and predominant
focus on eye safety at all HSE meetings.
Similar campaign competitions are in progress, with the winners to be announced early into
the 3rd quarter of the year. While the campaign is still progressing, results have been very
promising thus far with no injuries reported, and a sharp reduction of numbers of eye related
consultations in the first aid room, as shown in the table below:
Eye Injury Campaign Jan Feb Mar Apr May
No. of Injuries 0 0 0 0 0
Minor complaints at the first aid clinic 11 6 2 2 0

ASMEF Pursues Green Recycling Business
In the aim to pursue its diversified
business lines that helps the company
to overcome the current market
challenges, ASMEF embarks to
the Green Recycling Business.
Green Recycling Business by ASMEF
involves dismantling where the ship is
broken down when its life tenure has
been completed.
As one of the ship disposal techniques,
ship dismantling involves retired ships
to be stripped off their machinery,
barring the value - adding materials
which can be reused for new ships or
other applications. The process of
taking the ship apart is mostly an
onshore operation.
It was noticed that a massive number
of offshore marine vessels, rigs and
jack ups are already old. There are also
restrictions being put on the age of t
hese vessels because of the outdated
technology especially in the safety
systems. Therefore, ASMEF has
embarked into green recycling
business.
The first vessel came for dismantling
in March and the second vessel came
in May 2017.
