2. SHELTERED INSTTRUCTION OBSERVATION
PROTOCOL (SIOP)
WHAT IS SIOP?
SIOP is an instructional model
that has been research based
and validated to be effective in
addressing academic needs of
English Learners. (CAL, 2018)
WHO BENEFITS?
English Language Learners in
grades kindergarten through
twelfth grade.
4. TECHNOLOGY WITH SIOP
A tool that can help enhance the learning
experience for students is technology. There are
many types of technology that can be used to
assist 1st grade English Learners in the
classroom.
• Digital Word Wall
• Digital Storytelling
• Computers or laptops
• Quizlet(Rhodes, 2014)
5. CLASSROOM SCENARIO #1
The teacher will gather all of the students together
on the carpet. They teacher will read then a book,
stopping to ask questions and show the illustrations.
The students will draw sequencing pictures retelling
the story. If the students are ready, they can also
write sentences to go with the pictures.
6. CLASSROOM SCENARIO #2
Student are having difficulties in the reading
assignments. They are not able to show their
understanding of concepts, skills, and strategies that
are being used by their peers. The students will hear
the story using the digital story telling app. We will
dramatize the story using action words. For instance, if
while reading the story, if the character is crying, act as
if you are crying. If the sentence ends in an
exclamation, then make sure that you show excitement.
7. CLASSROOM SCENARIO #3
Students are given a list of vocabulary words to study and
take a quiz on at the end of the week. To help ELL’s, the
teacher will create a quizlet with the list of words. The
students will use quizlet to read and hear the words. They
will have the chance to quiz themselves to make sure that
they understand prior to the quiz.
8. CONCLUSION
The steps in making sure that students become literate in a
second language teachers should first assess the students,
provide instruction, give differentiated instruction, develop the
five basic reading abilities, modify when necessary, and provide
students that opportunity to practice. Technology has become
a great resource to use in the classroom. There is an
abundance amount of technology resources that can be found
to accomplish all six steps. (Wakefield, 2012)
