Project-based learning (PBL) is a student-cantered pedagogy that involves a dynamic classroom approach in which students acquire a deeper knowledge through active exploration of real-world challenges and problems. Students learn about a concept or subject by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to a complex question, challenge, or problem. PBL contrasts with paper-based, rote memorization, or teacher-led instruction that presents established facts or portrays a smooth path to knowledge by instead posing questions, problems or scenarios. Students(6th-8th) of SNIS also learned many scientific concepts through PBL which strengthened their knowledge and skills in Science and made learning more interesting. They also displayed their work in the form of models, charts and presentations to the students of grades 4 and 5 to motivate them and create more interest in Science.

Students in the girls' dormitory of SNIS got the wonderful opportunity to visit the ‘Nativity Children’s home and interact with the children there. Before the outing, the girls excitedly prepared for the visit and came up with different ideas to entertain the children. They choreographed dance performances by themselves and even came up with interactive games. The boarding students of SNIS took along with them 3 boxes of clothes and toys to share with the children. On reaching there, the girls received a delightful surprise from the orphanage girls as they performed a welcome song. The boarders got to know them a little more and discovered how ambitious they are with many of the girls aspiring to be doctors and engineers and even lawyers. They danced with our students and enthusiastically watched the performances. It was a visit to remember and cherish. It exemplified all that SNIS stands for, nurturing students into successful, responsible and ethical leaders who can brighten the world with compassion, curiosity and creative fire.

Garbage has become a serious problem in the world today. Only one out of every six water bottles ends up in the recycling bin, the rest are sent to landfills or contribute to devastating ocean pollution. Teaching children to care for the environment is a learning experience that is an important part of growing up. It gives them skills in respect, empathy, appreciation, responsibility, and teaches them about consequences. Grade 2 has been inquiring into waste and its devastating effects on the planet. Our students have been learning how each of us can help lessen the burden on the planet and save marine and land animals by recycling, reusing and reducing your overall consumption of plastic and other waste. Recycling is one of the best ways for us to have a positive impact on the world in which we live. Learning by example is one of the most important ways to discover. In an attempt to learn through doing, the students enthusiastically participated in the ‘Best out of Waste’ activity. It was amazing to see the different innovative ideas the students came up with making the activity and enriching and a worthwhile experience. They’ll have a greater appreciation for the way things work, and a better understanding of our precious ecosystem.

The first SNIS ESL Camp of 2019 was off to an amazing start! Our young campers after spending the morning of 3rd April unpacking and resting, assembled in the school’s Learning Resource Centre (LRC) for an afternoon filled with excitement and adventure. After a quick briefing, 3 teams set off on a race around the school, completing tasks to get their next clues. Teams first scrambled around the LRC to find a copy of a ‘Sounder’ an American classic, and then raced to the dance room to learn some Indian dance moves. Once they mastered that, they raced to the school’s swimming pool to do a task which had them wet and giggly. After the pool, it was time for some games. The teams raced to our school’s Basketball court to shoot some baskets. This took a while, as the teams struggled to get the baskets in, but perseverance paid off and all teams managed to finish the task! For the final task, the teams made their way to our school’s indoor sports stadium, where they tried their hands at Archery. Finally, the teams raced back to the starting point, where excited SNIS students and teachers were waiting for the winners. It was a great way to start our ESL Camp and the campers got to meet some of our amazing teaching staff members and understood the layout of the school and its facilities.

The 6th and 7th graders of SNIS assembled in the Activity Hall on the afternoon of 22nd March for an interesting workshop on responding to literature. SNIS is a part of a broader 'Reading Program - Readathon' , an initiative which aims to get all the Middle and Senior School students engrossed in the magic of books. The focus of this workshop was 'Responding to Reading' an area where the students needed some guidance on. The workshop leader developed the workshop through an interesting story telling session, which paved the way for further explorations on the ways we react to literature. The students learnt the different ways in which 'post-its' can be used to track their response to the texts and the different ways in which the responses can be recorded. It was a fun, and insightful workshop for our young students

In accordance with World Down Syndrome Day, 21st March, 2019, the Biology/EVM students of Grade 9 at SNIS presented a short assembly to spread awareness about Down Syndrome. Down Syndrome is an incurable genetic disorder caused by having an extra chromosome, and can result in physical growth delays, intellectual disabilities and characteristic facial features. In keeping with the traditional gesture, grades 6 to 10 came to school in #OddSocks – a pair of coloured, mismatched socks. Odd socks have become a symbol of Down Syndrome; the socks both encourage diversity and are shaped like chromosomes. The presentation showed the theme song of the year, lives of some accomplished people with Down Syndrome and how it is possible to live a happy life despite having Down Syndrome.

Electrochemistry is a branch of Chemistry that deals with the study of the production of electricity from the energy that is released during chemical reactions. Grade 9 students learnt this concept by setting up an experiment in the chemistry lab. They used aqueous solution of sodium chloride as an electrolyte and different combinations of electrodes (Copper-copper, zinc-copper, graphite- copper) and then tested the voltage across the two terminals with the help of a multi meter and voltmeter. They found out that, when the difference is more in the reactivity of the two electrodes, higher will be voltage generation.
