Empowering the Community and
Classrooms by using UDL &
Technology
EDU620: Meeting
Individual Student
Needs With Technology
Instructor: Kimberly Hall
by: Shantel Pugh
The Mississippi State Department of Education is
committed to providing a rewarding education to all
students no matter the age in Mississippi so they will be
prepared for college and careers in the 21st century. I,
Shantel L. Pugh, as a representative of the community will
be proposing “Empowering the Community and
Classrooms by using UDL & Technology” I feel my
proposal will be beneficial to our community and close
existing achievement gaps among various groups of
students. All students even adults learn differently.
My proposal offers Various ways of presenting information,
visually, verbally and hands-on. Hands-on experiences will
include miniature whiteboards, a computer, a Smart Board
and an iPad for the audience to use.
I feel the reason to implement Universal Design for Learning (UDL), is because
it is a set of principles and guidelines that serve as a framework for curriculum
design and educational decision-making. These principles provide a blueprint for
creating instructional goals, methods, materials, and assessments that work-not a
single, one-size-fits-all solution but rather flexible approaches that can be
customized and adjusted to address the variability of all learners. This project is
to help everyone PK through 12th grade students and all adult learners ones
who are in CTE schools and ABE classes at the community center.
Station 1: Universal Design for Learning (UDL):
One will find that in every area the key to using UDL is to reduce or
eliminate barriers to student learning. This requires applying UDL’s 3
main principles of representation, action and expression, and engagement
in a systematic way.
As a member of the community, I feel we need to think more strategically about
how we can design curriculum, shape instruction, select instructional
materials/technology, and develop assessments that support variations in learning.
we can harness the power of technology to support and challenge students as well
as capitalize on simpler, non-technological ways to engage students, present
information, and measure progress.
Differentiated instruction along with technology will be implemented to all
students; differentiate instruction is to recognize students’ varying background
knowledge, readiness, language, preferences in learning and interests; and to react
responsively.
Differentiation
is a teacher’s response to learners’ needs
Guided by a
growth mindset
and general
principles of
differentiation
Teachers can
differentiate
through
According to
students’
Using a variety of
instructional
approaches such
as
supportive learning
environment
content readiness DRAFTS
quality curriculum process interest graphic organizers
teaching up product learning profile scaffold reading
flexible grouping affect Group sessions
respectful tasks learning environment technology
Repeated assessment
to inform teaching and
learning
independent study
Charting
learning centers
web quests & web
inquiry
Using differentiated
instruction like
computer games,
whiteboard, or even
interactive classroom
discussion, students
will be engaged and
excited about their
learning. UDL and
differentiation go
hand-in-hand by not
forcing students to fit
in a single setting but
accommodating and
rewarding each
student’s
individuality.
Station 2: Technology and UDL for All Learners
□ Mission, Belief, and Goals Statement
□ A rewarding education accommodated by technology for all students
is "everybody's business."
• This statement is to better prepare all students and educators for a
successful education, career and future through technology.
• This statement will also sparkle an interest within the heart and mind of
students; assistive technology will be available as well.
• Offers students a good foundation by providing them with a head-start
on what their future may hold.
□ Educational programs or courses offered
1. A Route for Every Learner _ works with every learner
and offers educational games for all learners.
2. Faces of Learning_ enhances Differentiation of UDL
□ Technology integration and career and technical education
(CTE) is very important and can be accompanied by the use of
UDL as well and will be implemented in the proposal.
□ Below are Courses and programs that are offered that incorporate
technology and career skills that I feel will benefit the whole community
and be beneficial to the future of the community.
Cosmetology, Auto Body, Computer Tech, Culinary
Classes for minors and Adults, Landscaping/gardening
(exterior design), Interior Design
Health Sciences ,Construction shops with wood and bricks
for
Building (architecture), Computer Essentials for grades PK
through 12, and Business Management
Station 3: 21st-Century Skills Acquisition
and Employability
□ Many young people struggle in their transition to the labour/career-market
but with technology skills being applied they will be more prepared for the
21st-Century future.
□ The Use of New Technology is a major advancement to 21st-Century Skills
Acquisition and Employability it offers:
Increase professional development for student future
Increase student ability to work with various means of technology
Will prepare students to transition into the 21st-century working environment
Creates a sense of diversity within students to enhance creativity, innovation and
collaboration.
21st-Century Skills Acquisition and Employability
also offers Tools and Interaction
□ Tools: Computers or iPads
Students learn about programs they can use in their future career
opportunities, such as ones offered by social media websites.
Visit the CAST web site. The CAST web site devotes a large section to
Universal Design for Learning. Here visitors will find an articulation of
UDL, discussions of its core concepts, descriptions of UDL research
projects, a listing of tools and resources that support UDL, and ideas and
examples for implementing UDL.
□ Interaction: Programs that students would use in these environments
Students will work together in group programs about certain career skills.
UDL considers many different ways for people to work with each other and
collaboration is very important. .
Technology computer labs programs will be provided.
Valuable to future career goals for students when they can achieve mastery in
specific programs they will use in future careers.
