Project Experience
2007 – Present
• Work with agency administration, contractors and ISBE staff to design and
implement agency wide longitudinal data warehouse. The longitudinal data system is
an enterprise level data warehouse that extracts and stores key data from internal
data structures. The data is then used for analysis, reporting, distribution to data
marts as well as a public facing portal. I have involvement in every facet of planning
and implementation from requirements gathering to ETL design, modeling,
architecture, data structures, security, performance optimization and day to day
maintenance.
• Plan and oversee the migration of all ISBE data systems to a new virtual server
environment. This is a complex process that includes full server software installation
and complete migration of all data components for all production, development and
QA databases. During the virtualization, all processes and standards are being
analyzed and streamlined for optimal performance and portability between servers. I
am authoring full documentation on processes needed for server migration to virtual
environments. I developed automation scripts, applications and instructions to
streamline standardize and expedite migration.
• Manage the upgrade of ISBE database systems to latest SQL Server platforms. The
agency is perpetually evolving to the latest technology and always in the process of
upgrading current business systems to the latest platform. The process includes full
analysis of business systems and their databases to assure compatibility with the
new database engine and latest ANSI standards. DTS packages are migrated or
rewritten in the new SSIS platform. Performance on data systems and databases is
being optimized to take full advantage of new features of the latest platform. In
addition we are addressing and documenting incompatibilities with current databases
and processes in the new environment in order to increase portability of our current
and future database structures.
• Lead analyst for TCIS system. TCIS is the business system used by ISBE to track
and manage educator certification for the state of Illinois. TCIS is based on the
VB6SQL Server 2000 platform. I was responsible for technical support, business
consultation, system enhancements, data extracts and management of day to day
operation of the business system. The system interfaces with many other high level
educator related applications and is a key component in daily agency operations.
2005 – 2007
• Worked with Illinois educators and ISBE staff to design and develop Illinois Teacher
Service Record (TSR). TSR is an ASP .NET web based educator data collection and
reporting application that allows school districts to submit, edit and validate teacher
information. It was created to streamline the previously cumbersome reporting
method and give educators the most user friendly environment possible for
submitting and approving educator data to ISBE as well as ensure a much higher
usability of data for throughput. Teacher Service Record is showing an increasingly
integral role in Illinois educator data reporting on a state and federal level since the

implementation of the web based system and strong emphasis on data integrity and
reporting accuracy imposed by the systems design. The TSR web system has been
growing exponentially since its inception and continues to be a high priority for
enhancement and state / federal data reporting.
• Convert and port educator certification data from the old certification system
(CERTS, CERTSAA) data structure to the new Educator Certification System (ECS).
The ECS conversion required significant data restructuring and advanced data
message techniques to ensure historical data usability. Along with data conversion I
was also working with staff to port the existing database structure to a new structure
that would enforce data integrity across the system and still maintain usability of
historical data and its previous structure as well as optimize the data structure for
maximum performance in a web based environment.
• Created automated complex data procedures to extract TSR related data according
to federal standards (EDEN). EDEN data extraction processes for TSR employ a
number of automated procedures and processes that extract, reformat and message
state housed educator data and deliver it to a pre-defined federal format. A number
of aggregate functions and cross system validations along with advanced database
development were employed into the EDEN extraction to ensure maximum data
integrity and usability.
2003 - 2005
• Spearheaded the database architecture, database administration, database
development and documentation for the release of Karmaks’ Service module of the
ProfitMaster product line. This module will manage daily operations for a heavy
trucking service shop including managing employee time and pay scales and repair
invoicing. As with the other modules in the ProfitMaster series it is being constructed
on the .NET platform using SQL Server 2000 for data storage. I am responsible for
creating and managing all database related aspects of this module and the entire
ProfitMaster product line. Daily tasks include schema design and construction,
database performance testing and optimization, stored procedure and trigger
construction, advanced query design and implementation, version control of
database objects, delegation of database development tasks, maintaining database
standards across the product line, synchronization of data structures between
development and QA environments and documentation of all database related
material. I am also in the process of constructing a large scale data conversion piece
for this module.
• Administer of database operation for Karmaks’ Director Series product line. This
product line was developed for the heavy trucking industry for smaller dealerships
and service shops that are not large enough for an enterprise package like
ProfitMaster. The software was built on the .NET platform using SQL Server 2000 for
data storage and retrieval. I was responsible for all database design, development
and documentation for the Director Series product line. I performed many tasks
associated with this project including architecture and construction of database
schema, procedure and trigger development, query construction and optimization,
performance and load testing, database versioning, data structure synchronization

• Administer of database operations for Karmaks’ Sales Management module release
for the ProfitMaster product line. This is an enterprise level software package that
caters to the heavy trucking industry and was created to manage day to day sales
and profits for heavy trucking fleets, vendors and dealerships internationally. The
software was created on the .NET platform coupled with a SQL Server 2000 back
end. I was responsible for a considerable amount of the database cleanup and
optimization as I was brought on board late in the development phase. I was also
responsible for architecting and implementing the many database enhancements
following the general release of the Sales Management module including
complicated data conversion processing for loading data from third party vendors.
Daily tasks included database administration, design and development of all
database enhancements, query optimization, database distribution to customers,
maintain and administer the QA and development database environments and
documentation of database related components.
• Worked with small development team on the re-engineering and enhancement of a
large marketing based e-commerce system (DirectLink). My primary role with the
system re-design was backend relational database engineering, development and
administration. I was responsible for a significant amount of stored procedure, trigger
and schema development. The backend structure consists of a very complex
clustered server, multi tiered environment. I was responsible for the design,
development, optimization and implementation of data extraction and manipulation
processes across a distributed server environment. Daily tasks included complex
query construction, testing / debugging new development, delegating database
development tasks, TSQL development and interface integration with backend
processes.
2000 - 2001
• Worked with a small development team to design and develop a large e-commerce
direct marketing web order engine (DirectLink). The project was developed using
HTML, DHTML, ASP, VB Script, Java Script, IIS 5, SQL Server 2000(SQLTSQL)
and Windows 2000. The engine includes a comprehensive web based administration
site that can be used to alter and set up all aspects of the web site and database.
The engine is a very complex database marketing/direct mail tool used by the
insurance industry to target certain demographics. The engine is extremely robust in
that it supports multiple clients within the same front and back end structure and
allows each client to customize several aspects of the site. Customizable features
include custom image and color schemes, pricing structures, promotional packages,
news and countless other features. I played a major role in the design and
development of the relational database schema. The schema consists of over 250
tables, 115 stored procedures as well as several views, triggers and automated
features.
