Sentence Structure
The way words and
phrases are arranged in
a sentence.
Phrase - is a group of words that may
contain a subject or a verb but not both.
Examples: the master of his own destiny
will be arriving tomorrow
Clause – is a group of words that has a
subject and a predicate and is used as a
part of a sentence.
Independent/Main Clause – a group
of words that can stand on its own as
a sentence; it has a subject, a verb,
and is a complete thought.
Example: He ran.
Dependent/Subordinate Clause – is a group
of words that also contains a subject
and a verb, but it is not a complete
thought.
Example: Because I woke up late this
morning…

What is a Simple Sentence?
• A simple sentence contains one
independent/main clause.
Examples
Stories entertain.
Stories and riddles entertain.
Stories entertain and amuse.
Stories and riddles amuse and entertain.
Examples
• I‘m happy.
• Robert doesn’t eat meat.
• My brother and I went to the mall last
night.
Compound Sentence
A compound sentence has two or
more independent/main clauses
commonly joined by a coordinating
conjunctions (for, and, nor, but, or,
yet, so).
Examples:
Stories entertain, and riddles amuse.
Stories entertain, and riddles amuse, but
poems delight.
• Semicolons (;) may also be used to join the
main clauses in a compound sentence.
Example:
Few wild animals live in China’s densely
populated plains; in remote areas wild life is
abundant.
Examples
• I‘m happy, but my brothers are always
complaining.
• My brother and I went to the mall last
night, but we didn’t buy anything.
• This new laptop computer has already crashed
twice, and I have no idea why.
Complex Sentence
A complex sentence has one independent clause
and one or more dependent clauses.
Examples
• I like Toni Cade Bambara’s stories because they
have real-life characters.
• When I read her stories, I enjoy them because they
are true to life.
I’m happy, even though I don’t make
much money.
After getting home from work, my
brother and I went to the mall last
night.
This new laptop computer, which I
bought yesterday, has already
crashed twice.
Compound-Complex Sentence
A compound-complex sentence –
has two or more independent/main
clauses and at least one subordinate
clause.

The ABCDE network will be holding a film festival
this January 2018 at Zamboanga del Norte National High
School – Annex campus. In accordance to the said
festival, the movie director of each film is in search
for talents from the host school, who will impersonate
the actors/actresses in the movie. You are tasked to
create a “live trailer”, which is line with the scenes
that you are assigned. The talents can create and
perform their desired story for each character and are
also entitled to create a title for their performance.
Each story will be given a minimum time of two minutes
and a maximum of five minutes. Your work will be
evaluated by the directors from the different films.
