3. One Country, Two Systems
When Great Britain handed over one of its last Colonies, Hong Kong, the Brits and
China had an agreement regarding a country and two systems solution
"One country, two systems" is a constitutional principle describing the governance of
Hong Kong and Macau since they became regions of China in 1997 and 1999,
respectively.
Under the principle, each of the two regions could continue to have its own
governmental system, legal, economic and financial affairs, including trade relations
with foreign countries, all of which are independent from those of the Mainland.
4. Why are they Protesting? Unification.
The proposed amendments that sparked the protests would allow Hong Kong residents,
foreign residents, and visitors to be extradited to mainland China, where they would
not be guaranteed a fair trial and may be subject to torture and other human rights
abuses.
5. What are the Protesters Demands?
Full withdrawal of the extradition bill
A commission of inquiry into alleged police brutality
Retracting the classification of protesters as “rioters”
Amnesty for arrested protesters
Dual universal suffrage, meaning for both the Legislative Council
and the Chief Executive

10. FireChat: an ideal protest tool, keeping people connected even when the government
shuts down the communications infrastructure.
The messaging app created by Open Garden can send and receive messages without
an internet connection.
It uses peer-to-peer Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Direct connections to link to other nearby
FireChat-enabled devices.

15. Summary
Hong Kong's protests started in June against plans to allow extradition to mainland
China.Critics feared this could undermine judicial independence and endanger
dissidents.
Until 1997, Hong Kong was ruled by Britain as a colony but then returned to China.
Under the "one country, two systems" arrangement, it has some autonomy, and its
people more rights.
The bill was withdrawn in September but demonstrations continue and now demand
full democracy and an inquiry into police actions.
Clashes between police and activists have become increasingly violent, with police
firing live bullets and protesters attacking officers and throwing petrol bombs
16. Overall, media activism has played a major role in mass dissemination of
information through various social media apps as well as online & print media ,
for the purpose of collecting funds, gathering masses for protests and its planning
Achieving the things which HK Protesters have achieved in such short span of time
would have been unfathomable without the use of effective media
HK Protests come under of the best protests in 21st century
The coming weeks are a critical period for the future of democracy, human rights,
and prosperity in Hong Kong. History has shown that authoritarian rulers act more
assertively when met with a permissive international environment.
The United States and other democracies must take strong, immediate action to
defend their own economic and security interests, to stand with the people of
Hong Kong as they defend their democratic rights and freedoms, and to
communicate the risks China faces should the situation deteriorate further.
