1 Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)
is a synthetic
fluoropolymer which has a
molecular structure built up
from a large number of
tetrafluoroethylene bonded
together.
The molecular formula for PTFE is
(C2F4)n

9. Drawbacks….
• Under compression or in situations where
rubbing or
abrasion can occur, it can produce wear particles.
These
can result in a chronic inflammatory reaction
• The possible risk of fumes when PTFE is heated
at 600 K
327 °C or above which causes fever with flu-like
symptoms
• Surgical use of PTFE can produce Teflon
granuloma in
patients. Teflon granuloma is an inflammatory
cell
foreign-body reaction to polytetrafluoroethylene
fibers or
injection.
• The toxicity of PTFE decomposition products
been
studied in rats, rabbits, guinea pigs and mice.
