To Whom It May Concern
Reference: Mr Seth Naicker
Dear Sir / Madam
This serves to confirm that I have known Seth Naicker since 2011 when I was a participant on the Qiniso
Dialogues conducted by GIBS and the Mail and Guardian. At that time I was the Member of the Mayoral
Committee of Transport in the City of Johannesburg.
Experiencing Seth as a co-facilitator of a really innovative and deep process was remarkable. I was
particularly struck by Seth’s deep understanding of himself, confidence in his processes and tools and
willingness to have fun and create the environment for a truly authentic experience for participants. My
highlight from the experience was the “Race of Life” activity which in a really simple and non-threatening
way raised issues of the structural and inter-generational components of poverty, underdevelopment and
privilege. I have had many opportunities after that experience to reflect on the learnings from the race and
have had to delve deep to grapple in an ongoing fashion with some of what it highlighted.
After the Qiniso dialogues Seth kept in contact and very kindly volunteered to conduct an engagement with
stakeholders in the transport sector via my office in 2012. Once again Seth demonstrated remarkable
commitment, professionalism and a deep knowledge of the complexity of identity, social cohesion and the
need for authentic conversation. Even though this was an offering from Seth for which he received no
reimbursement he assembled a professional team and conducted the morning with great skill, love and care.
Since first meeting Seth, he has kept his network abreast of his initiatives via email newsletters. Even though
I have often not responded to his updates – I have followed with keen interest – Seth’s thinking about ,
writing and provocations on issues of social cohesion, celebration of diversity and the search for common
humanity. He has been advocating for a long time the need for spaces and forums to have these experiences
and conversations – not in moments of crisis, or as knee jerk reactions – but as a way of being.
Seth has advocated tirelessly and built deep credibility around his purpose, passion and desire to make a
meaningful contribution to complex issues that South Africa in particular and humanity at large are
confronting. Seth continues to work on himself and deepen his self-knowledge as he undertakes this really
important work.
My association with Seth has enriched me both personally and professionally.
