3. Zhmerinka today – a city being a part
of an oblast. It has one of the biggest
nodes of the south-western railway, a
major, top rank railway station with
impressive transit of passengers and
transport of goods to Kiev, Lviv, Moscow,
Odessa, Simferopol, Ungheni and Chop
and further – to the countries of the West.
The city is located within a distance of 35
km (south-east) from the centre of the
oblast.
The railway divides the territory of the
city into three parts.

4. The city of Zhmerinka has a favourable geographical and geostrategic
location. The distance between the city and Kiev, the capital of Ukraine is 300
km, the port in Odessa – 450 km.
Zhmerinka just as the oblast is equally distant from the eastern and
western borders of Ukraine. The distance from the border with EU countries
is 500 km, the border with Moldova – 85 km and the border with the Russian
Federation – 550 km.

5. The Territory’s Natural and Climatic
Conditions and Resources
1. Location. Relief. The city of Zhmerinka is located at an area that in terms of
geomorphological conditions belongs to a plateau with two main rivers: the Dnieper River and the Southern Bug
River.
2. Climate of the region: moderately continental.
3. In terms of geology the city is located on a quaternary sedimentary rocks represented by sandy clays, sands and
clays. The region’s seismic activity is classified at level 6.
4. Hydrogeological conditions. Subsoil waters in wells at the depth of 3.0-25.0 m, in ravines – 0.5-1.5 m. Bores in
this regions are typical of increased wateriness. The level of water in bore-holes is between 24.0 and 71.0 m. The
chemical composition of water: bicarbonate and calcareous waters, mineralisation: up to 1g/l, general hardness:
5.53-8.09 mg-ekw.
5. Engineering and geological conditions, construction assessment. In the city there are three types of construction
areas:
Type 1 – favourable to construction – sandy clays, sands and clays of low dampness.
Type 2 – areas with low construction value – slopes of ravines of the inclination of 10-20% and depth of subsoil
waters up to 3.0 m. For the development of such areas it will be necessary to spend funds to plan the area and
supply subsoil waters.
Type 3 – areas unsuitable for construction – slopes of ravines of the inclination exceeding 20%. In order to use these
areas for construction a number of actions concerning planning the area’s reclamation and works preventing
subsidence should be conducted.
6. Useful minerals. In the region useful minerals are represented by the local construction materials: granite,
limestone, coal raw materials, sands, raw materials for bricks and tiles and peats. The deposits will be sufficient for
up to 30 years.
The area of Zhmerinka is rich in peat deposits. Peat can be used for development of green areas in the city.
The deposits of useful minerals and peat located near the city of Zhmerinka are an asset for the development of
construction industry in the city. The deposits of peat will facilitate the production of fertilizers and use in heating
individual (private) residential buildings.

6. Population of the City of Zhmerinka - 35.3 Thousand
According to the Ukrainian census the average age of the city’s inhabitants is 37.9 years (35.4 – men and 40 –
women), the average of the whole oblast – 39.8. This is one of the key factors in Ukraine.

7. Zhmerinka is a city where various kinds of manufacturing activity develop, in
