A resident of Chicago, Illinois, Sean Tenner has been president of Chicago-based KNI Communications since 2008. Outside of his role as president, Sean Tenner is also chairman of the Obama Legacy Initiative (OLI) board, an organization focused on encouraging Americans to adopt healthier nutritional habits. In a July 2021 blog post, OLI explains the benefits of using a raised bed garden. Raised bed gardens are planted above ground, created by placing mounding soil in a bed 6 to 8 inches high without side supports or placing it in a frame made from wood, plastic planks, or other materials. OLI says using raised bed gardens is one of the ways that people living in food deserts can address food insecurity. Opting for raised bed gardens instead of traditional planting has a few benefits. For one, it makes gardening easy for expert and novice gardeners. Other benefits are that these gardens are less prone to growing weeds, have better drainage, and have warmer soil. Moreover, because they come with various options, they can be tailored to the gardener’s needs. Finally, raised bed gardens allow organizations to address one of the most crippling effects of poverty: malnutrition. This is primarily because it gives people in these areas easy access to food.
