When you return to Fire
Island next year, you
may notice some of the local
deer are sporting the latest
wildlife monitoring acces-
sories: an ear tag and even a
tracking collar. This adorn-
ment is part of a new study
conducted by Fire Island
N ational Seashore as it gets
another step closer to produc-
ing a deer and vegetation man-
agement plan for the park.
Whitetail deer (Odocoileus
virginianus), while native to
Atlantic barrier islands, were
apparently not numerous on
Fire Island when the park was
established in 1964. Their
numbers, however, have
increased dramatically since
that time, along with issues
relating to an overabundance
of deer: their impact on
native and cultivated vegeta-
tion and forest regeneration,
and their association with the
spread of disease.
Participants in recent surveys
conducted for the N ational
Park Service indicated park res-
idents, neighbors and visitors
enjoy deer on Fire Island, but
many worry about deer-related
problems. In the Deer, People
and Parks survey Cornell
University conducted in 2007,
more than half of the respon-
dents agreed with the state-
ment, “The park should start
now to address deer-related
impacts.” They were also very
interested in providing mean-
ingful input on the manage-
ment of deer. While the park
has participated in years of
monitoring and research, it
does not have a formal deer
management plan or the associ-
ated environmental impact
statement that is required to
accompany such a plan.
