Objective To obtain a position developing elegant database-interactive software for the
web using ColdFusion as the primary platform with an opportunity to work with
a dynamic and enthusiastic team while expanding my skills.
(generic cover letter, an outline to modify on a per-opportunity basis)
Dear Hiring Manager,
I would like to submit myself for your consideration for the ColdFusion Web Developer position that
you have posted, located in Xxx, XX. While having been based out of Baltimore, MD for most of my
career, I feel it is time for a change and have set myself up accordingly; I am entirely mobile,
immediately available and eager to relocate for the right opportunity.
I have been a CF developer since 1997. My CF experience is both as a developer and as an
administrator. Primarily I have been a developer but in my tenure with Edgewebhosting, Inc. I had
more responsibilities than I will list, for the sake of brevity. We took a small company of less than 10
people to the "next level" and now they are the top hosting company listed on Adobe's website for
ColdFusion. I handled all issues ColdFusion that came up in the hosting environment. I have
enhanced, repaired, and debugged dozens of websites for our clients and so am experienced
understanding and working with existing code bases. I know the environments both of small growing
businesses such as Edge and large corporate organizations such as Sylvan and PHH (Element). I
have experience in everything from client relations to vendor relations to technical expertise in "server
relations" and "datacenter relations" to (and especially) creating useful software that delights the end
user. Also, I am a member of invitation-only mailing lists for behind-the-scenes CF issues that don't
belong in the public domain, and I've been on the Adobe pre-release program for CF from v6.1
through 9.
I realize that I may have more years of experience than the job description calls for, but I endeavor to
not be seen as overqualified because of it. I am interested in this position on many levels and feel I
would be a valuable asset. Pay rate is negotiable for the right opportunity, let's just say I am more
interested in quality of life than quantity of money.
I can arrange for references upon request. Due to varying schedules and workloads it is best to
arrange a time in advance. (Vlad Friedman, CEO Edgewebhosting, Inc. and Brian Dietrick, former
software manager at Sylvan Learning).
Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to speaking with you further about this opportunity.
Sincerely,
Scott

Work Experience:
9/2010 – 5/2012 Sylvan Learning – Baltimore, MD
Senior ColdFusion Engineer – Contractor
Managed sylvanlearning.com in its entirety. The environment consisted of a base ColdFusion / SQL Server application
with two disparate integrated CMS systems driving different parts of the application, many back-end legacy processes
(.NET) and scheduled tasks (CF) managing client data as collected by the web application, and older CF / JVM
installations that required near constant tending (e.g. managing the Java keystore as newer certs not in the keystore are
issued). Responsible for end-to-end software life cycle development including interfacing with the non-technical client (the
marketing department). Configured and implemented a Subversion server for source control of all ColdFusion code.
5/2010 – 8/2010 Congruent Media LLC – Baltimore, MD

with both internal and external systems. I was the lead ColdFusion engineer at Edge and it was my responsibility to keep
all ColdFusion servers and applications operational and running 24/7/365 regardless of the issue. Used various tools
such as SeeFusion and FusionReactor, editing the jvm.config manually, IIS and ColdFusion log files, etc. to troubleshoot
and optimize ColdFusion applications for Edge and its clients. As the hosting division grew, more and more clients were
software development houses themselves hosting their own clients' sites with us and Edgewebhosting offering software

concentrate on the hosting component of the company and phase out software development.
1992 – 2002 PHH Vehicle Management Services – Hunt Valley, MD
(now Element Fleet Management)
Developer (1998 – 2002)
Developed award-winning custom software in various languages on various platforms, including: Cold Fusion (yes,
two words at the time), PowerBuilder on Windows, SQR reports on Windows querying Sybase, batch and Autosys
jobs on UNIX (Solaris). Involved in the design and coding of both the front-end UI and the back-end logic including
stored procedures in Sybase on both 2 and 3 tier applications. Some limited experience coding J2EE enterprise Java
Beans. Demonstrated ability to learn new coding languages quickly. The following are examples of some of the
projects I was involved with:
 PHHInterActive – Worked on many different parts of this extensive CF session-based secure OLTP application
which received many awards. This application has both 2- and 3-tier components using a Cold Fusion on IIS front
end with a Sybase on Solaris back end and a Websphere on Solaris middle tier which was slowly integrated. I
was involved in the entire life cycle of the development of components for this application including front end GUI
design, code logic and working with DBAs on database layout and design. In addition to the standard fair
database-populated application pages, I have created solutions to out of the ordinary problems.
 Avis InterActive – One of two primary developers on this CF session-based secure application with an Oracle 8i
data source running on an IBM mainframe (E10K). Avis InterActive has also won numerous industry awards.
 Internal applications – PHH has several internal desktop applications which I have been involved in developing.
These are object-oriented, written in PowerBuilder using PFC (PowerBuilder Foundation Classes) as parent
objects for inheritance.
 Vehicle Maintenance Assistance (VMA) – This was my first project as a Developer after transferring into IT from
my role as a Vehicle Service Specialist. Following technology training I was tasked with improving and updating
the VMA PowerBuilder desktop application, and later the Accident Management application as well.
Vehicle Service Specialist (1992 – 1998)
 Was in charge of authorizing and auditing requested maintenance and repairs on a fleet of over 1 million vehicles.
1986 – 1992 Various independent auto repair facilities, Atlanta, GA
Service Manager, Mechanic
Performed all jobs found in an automobile repair facility, including repairing vehicles, estimating repairs, interfacing with
customers, etc. During this time, enough experience was gained to become an ASE Certified Master Automobile
Technician. Also earned Master Med/HD Truck Technician certification along with several ancillary certifications such as
Advanced Engine Performance and Alternate Fuels..
6/2012 – present During this time I have been taking a bit of a sabbatical from the software industry to pursue other
interests while my expenses are low and I have had the opportunity to do so. My employment includes working at Kislings
– a pub/restaurant in Baltimore, WMF Watercraft & Marine in Millsboro, DE as a marine technician / painter / boat industry
apprentice, and doing volunteer IT work for a non-profit in NC. These are not especially germane to the position I am
